Default GA-P55A-UD3R: second video card (PCIe x4 slot) not showing in device manager

    Hi All,

Im trying to get 2 Radeon HD2600 cards in NON crossfire mode (to drive 4 monitors) on a GA-P55A-UD3R mobo but can't get second card visible in device manager in Windows 7 (x64) - its only showing the one card (from x16 slot). Ive tried disabling Turbo SATA3/USB3 and have tested the card in the first (x16) slot to check its OK. Im running F13 BIOS. Am I missing something? Any help much appreciated!!

i think you have to add them as if in crossfire,so delete your gpu drivers, install one card, install drivers shutdown, install second card and reboot and it should show up,or try connecting the xfire bridges but turn off xfire in ccc

    Hi Wazza,

I tried a few things just now - including removing drivers, adding crossfire cables etc but nothing doing to get this card visible. I tried removing the x16 slot card leaving just the x4 slot card and I dont see POST or Windows (yet same card works fine in x16 slot - it aint the card). Its just like the slot is dead. Anything else to try? Is there anyway (in BIOS or OS) to see if slot is alive? Im out of ideas.

do both cards not show up in x4 slot? tried clicking on anything in device manager and click scan for hardware changes? try setting pci-e#2 as first initial display in the bios

Thanks for getting back to me Wazza,
I tried a few more things just now (including as you suggested each card separately in the x4 slot, and setting PEG2) - still no go. I plugged a speaker to check POST beep and in x16 slot drives spin up and I get beep and then POST but with single card in x4 slot no beep (and presumably no POST). BUT - I have a RocketRAID 2300 controller card in the x1 PCIe slot (forgot to mention that!) and when I remove that the video card in x4 comes alive and I can POST and see BIOS.
So: Is this a limitation of the mobo? I have disabled SATA3/USB3 in BIOS (I read somewhere that can suck bandwidth from PCIe bus). Surely I should be able to run PCIe x1, x4 and x16 (in x8?) all at once? I'd be dispointed if thats not the case? Can you throw any light on that? I really need the RAID controller. Thanks for your help.

Update: Tried RAID controller in other x1 slot (with a single HD2600 in x4 slot) - same result - no POST. Surely as it is without anything in the x16 slot the x4 and 1 x1 slot should be OK? Is this a BIOS issue (F13)? Anyone out there running 2 cards in x4 and x1 slots?

im not sure on that mb,i know that enabling sata3/usb3 restricts pci-e lanes to 8x each if in xfire,i dont know how it affects the 4x slot

EDIT: does it tell you in the manual about the slots? and restrictions ect?

You should test an older BIOS or two, just to rule out this being a F13 BIOS bug. Be sure to disable Keep DMI Data in Qflash when flashing.

I'm checking the manual now but it looks like the only limitation is with the PCIE x16 slot and USB3/SATA6

It's looking like there is some limitation imposed when there shouldn't be, or there is a BIOS or compatibility issue.

Send in a report here and see what they have to say
GIGABYTE - Support & Downloads - Technical Support

The manual states this, not sure if this applies to your use of the RAID Card or not:

(Note 3) When the PCIEX1_1 or PCIEX1_2 slot is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX4 slot will operate at up to x1 mode.
(Note 4) The PCIEX16 slot operates at up to x4 mode when ATI CrossFireX is enabled.

    Hi Lsd,

Oufff - that Note3 is a killer - already I assumed when I bought the board (maybe stupidly?) that the second PCIe slot would run at x8 (I seem to remember a much older Gigabyte board I had would run both slots at x8 - I assumed this much newer board would do likewise) and was disapointed to find it only x4 - now I learn (if I can get it working at all) its going to be x1 - thats a real blow.
Is this is the issue - that the graphic card just can't run at x1? I must say if thats the case that is a real real blow. I need 4 monitors (and Im fed up with my 4 output FireMV that can't do decent video) and I need the RAID controller for reliable RAID5 (Ive had endless bad bad bad bad bad (yes really bad) experiences with Intel matrix RAID on several mobos)...
Lets assume I can get the slot run correctly at x1 and the second card works what kind of performance would I get? This is a work rig not a gaming machine but I do want to be able to play 1080p x264 mkvs (I dont need to play Crysis - Mame just fine ;-) If I could get x1 working would that be acceptable for the 2 monitor on that card?
Ok I went back and did some tests. I dug out a PCIe x1 wifi card and put that in the second x16(physical)/x4 slot(running at x1 according to Note3), hd2600 in primary x16 slot and RAID controller in x1. Booted - Video, RAID and Wifi card all work... So looks like the video cards dont like running at x1. What to do? Its a shame to thow out these cards - they should have been perfect for the job (and I had them lying around). Even if I get them working together what kind of performance will I get out of a video card at x1 ? Is all a bit (a lot) of a downer.... Given it looks like its on the card side is there anypoint lodging a support issue?
