    Unhappy Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 + i7 950..IDE boot problem?

Hello! I just finished purchasing a bunch of new parts from newegg (major upgrade from old single core athlon 64 rig), but I'm having some issues getting everything working.

Everything posted fine and is evidently working, however, I've been having issues with windows.

It was my goal to install Windows XP x64 (for more memory and game support), and I was able to, but then I noticed that the hard drive kept turning off. This happened both in windows and occassionally during boot up, just the sound of the hard drive turning off, then turning back on. So I tested out regular XP professional 32bit and I had the same issues, sounds of the hard drive turning off, then back on randomly. I then tried on another IDE drive and I got the same issues.

I have yet to test out the system on SATA drive, but will probably do that tomorrow when I have some free time.

My concern/question is whether this board supports an ide system drive or if it prefers sata or if it's just that i have a bad board or bad settings.

According to the lcd on the motherboard, I got the code FF, which from what I read means everything is okay.

I don't think it's the psu, because I've been using it for months on my old rig with a bunch of hard drives/cd drives connected.

I just want to confirm that all my parts are okay/that I don't need to exchange them for replacements before my time window is up.

As for bios settings, I've tried "failsafe defaults" and "optimized" defaults and haven't tweaked anything or OC'd, I've mainly just been trying to get it all running at stock speeds

    Here are my specs:

    PSU: Corsair 850TX 850w
    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5
    CPU: Intel i7 950 & Stock cooler
Video Card: Cheapo PCIE Geforce 8400 GS
    RAM: OCZ Reaper 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333 (OCZ3RPR1333C9LV8GK)
hd: Old maxtor & seagate pata drives (both working fine in other comps without randomly turning on and off)
Keyboard: Logitech G19 (it's a powerhog, so just mentioning it in case of any incompatibilities)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very very much!!

What are your power options set to for the HDD? You can decide when the drive powers down through control pannel's power options. Maybe the setting is too low. It can be set as low as 30 seconds. Because the system drive is accessed for more things than just loading programs (constant RAM paging, OS duties etc) it may be spinning down, then spun back up almost right away. If you connect two drives in a master-slave config, do they both do it, or just the OS drive?

You will certainly gain performance wise switching to a current SATA drive. If those IDE drives are pre-2007 ish then you'll see a HUGE increase. Newer drives will be using perpendicular recording, meaning faster data transfers due to higher platter density. I can't stress enough the benefit you'll get from switching over to something more current.

I can heartily recommend either a Western Digital Caviar Blue/Black (Black = bigger buffer) or a Samsung F3. If you get a WD then make sure to get the 640GB IMO, as it has two 320GB platters. The 500GB has two 250GB platters. Denser platters = greater speed. The 640GB WD or the sweet 500GB F3 should cost no more than 40/$55.

Thank you for all the replies!! :)

I managed to install XP x64 onto a spare laptop sata drive earlier today, though I had to do it twice. The first time, after I finished installing SP2, suddenly my nics weren't working, they detected the internet, but nothing was loading, so I reformatted and reinstalled xp x64 again. This time I didn't use the gigabyte disc that came with the board, I just installed the latest nic driver from a thumbdrive, then I updated everything else using the newest drivers from the gigabyte site. I at least didn't encounter that no internet issue again, I also purposely hid the nic update from the windows update site, since I think that may have messed it up before.

I also went into the bios and messed with my memory timings. My ram was rated at 9-9-9-20, but the bios had it set to 8-8-8-16. So I changed those from auto to manually 9-9-9-20. I didn't change the voltage though, because I only saw 1.64v and 1.66v, but not 1.65v that the memory was evidently rated at. So my current settings are: 9-9-9-20 and 1.5v.

I don't think it was the windows wakeup/sleep options, because I had it set to "always on" and I manually changed my settings to keep drives, monitor, etc. on indefinitely.

I may still be having the issue, but I couldn't really tell, because the sata laptop drive is so quiet, so I'll still have to do more testing on my next day off, because I have a heavy work schedule ahead for the next few days unfortunately.

Also, the native port 1-3 was disabled.

oh, and the motherboard revision number is 2, so not sure if that matters or not for this issue.

As for the connection, I had a single hard drive and a single dvd drive connected on the same ide cable, not sure if that was an issue too. I don't have any sata optical drives, so I'll need to buy a new one of those two (or see if the sata hds are stable and continue to use the optical drives on the ide port)

I've been thinking of either getting a Caviar Black, Raptor, or SSD, but I'm not sure which one would be best. I was leaning towards the 600gb Velociraptor, because it's 6gb/s and has a lot of space, vs a fast ssd, which would probably be about 1/6th the space for as much $$ or more. Any thoughts on the best boot drive?

definitely bothersome though, I hate it when hardware doesn't work/has issues.

1.66V will give you actual 1.648 usually, so that is the closest you can set to 1.65V

Since you have two devices connected on an IDE cable, be sure you have the devices and jumpers set properly.

The end of the cable is master, and the middle is slave, so set jumpers on the drive accordingly or use CS (Cable Select - which some devices do not like)

If you are looking for a fast boot drive SSD is the way to go! Then you can use your old IDE hard drive as storage, or pickup a 500GB-1TB SATAII drive for $50-60 and use that for additional storage.

i dont think you will see much from a wd mechanical drive, even if its sata3 heres some benchmark figures for that drive, bear in mind that read/write figures drop as the drive fills up,and ill post some screens of my samsung 1tb sata2 drive, from when the drives empty and another when its got just 40gb of free space left

Western Digital VelociRaptor (600GB) Review - ATTO Disk Benchmark - Reviews by ExtremeTech wd sata3 drive benches

below are some screens of my samsung 1tb f3 drive

    drive when empty

    with 40gb free space

remember running drives in ahci will improve an ssd's read/write figures, and the best to go for at the mo are the 60gb ocz vertex2,corsair force60 and mushkin callisto, all are the same specs

personally i would buy a 1tb mechanical drive and install my os on to that for the time being as newer ssd's are coming out, then id buy an ssd later but its up to you
