Default only 4 of 6 GB memory usable in Win 7 64 bit (other 2 GB Hardware Reserved)

    motherboard: GA-X58A-UD3R rev 2
    memory: CMX6GX3M3C1600C7
    processor: I7 930
    OS: Windows 7 64 bit

This motherboard came with BIOS FA installed and ran fine for 3 months. At that time I happened to look at the Resource Monitor/memory and found that 2GB of my 6GB memory were hardware reserved".

The current BIOS settings are default (i.e. no overclocking or any changes made).

I updated the BIOS to version FB and then after checking Resource Monitor/memory all 6GB were available for use and all of the hardware reserved was gone (i.e. 0).

However, at that time I started to get blue screens.

I got a version of memtest86 and created a self booting CD.

When I run memtest86 with BIOS FB I get many errors. In ALL cases error-bit is 00100000.

If I reinstall BIOS FA and run memtest86 I get no errors.

    I rotated the memory.
If the original memory is A, B, C I then rotated the memory so that it was B, C, A and then again C, A, B. I ran memtest86 with each of the memory configurations with BIOS FB and it reported all errors with error-bit 00100000. With BIOS FA it reported no errors (same as before rotation).

I took the board back to Frys and they removed the processor and said no pins were bent. They exchanged for another motherboard and the new one is doing the same thing. The technician at Frys says that is must be some type of memory incompatibility.

I am hoping someone on this forum would be able to give me some help to resolve this problem.

As long as I run BIOS FA it runs without and problems except that I am using only 4 or the 6 GB of memory. I sure would like to be able to utilize all 6GB of memory.

In regard to your suggestion to manually set memory/qpi voltages:

FB BIOS original memory voltage was set to 1.5V, qpi voltage was set to 1.1V

I manually went into MB Intelligent Tweaker / Advanced Voltage Settings and changed memory voltage to 1.66 (memory spec 1.65) and qpi was set to 1.32V (options were 1.3, 1.32, 1.34 so 1.315 was not available to select).

After making the manual voltage adjustments with BIOS FB the memory test failed just like it had previously.

I then used @BIOS to install your FC BIOS. I then had to reset the memory/qpi voltages as you requested. After installing BIOS FC and making the manual voltage changes the memory test failed just like it had previously. You also said "make sure that the keep dmi pool data is unchecked". The @BIOS has "Clear DMI data pool" and I checked that box which I believe is the goal you were trying to accomplish. Let me know if this is incorrect.

I am not experienced making these BIOS changes. The only changes I made were in the MB Intelligent Teak /Advanced Voltage Settings menu on memory and qpi voltages. If I was supposed to change them somewhere else or make some other change please let me know.

you say memory failed test you mean it still said 6gb installed 4gb usable? or it failed memtest? ok what you need to do now is check your cpu heatsink isnt overtightened if its one with a backplate, then test each memory stick one at a time in the first white ram slot from the cpu socket,if it boots up with every stick then repeat the test for the other two white ram slots untill you get to a slot or stick that it wont boot with, then tell me what slot it is or whether its just one specific ram stick that it wont boot with

if you say youve had the cpu socket inspected then it can only leave a faulty or dead ram stick, maybe faulty ram slot

When I say it failed again - what I mean is I ran the memtest86 and it generated errors. Here is a digital picture of the screen (randomly stopped it and took picture while it was running):
    Attachment 3017
This program is located on a bootable CD. To run the program I simply restart with the CD as the first boot device and it then reboots into the memtest86 program.

The heatsink being used is the supplied Intel heatsink that comes with the 930. Remember (as I stated in my original post) that this behavior has occurred now on two different motherboards. So if the processor heatsink is the problem than that means it was "to tight" on both motherboard installations. In both cases it was installed by a technician at Frys.

As for your boot tests with the ram I will work on that next but it may not get done until tomorrow.

i can see the full amount of memory in the bios in that pic so i dont think the ram/boot test will help with anything,it seems when its in windows its losing 2gb of ram,you still might need more qpi/vtt voltage you could try anything between 1.32v-1.35v and see if it makes any difference

if not then it could be that particular model of ram not being suited to this mb or not fully supported yet with the current bios's

could be a bad or faulty batch of ram too

That's just due to the old Memtest86+ version, he needs to use 4.15b2 ISO and it will read the correct timings, it's just cosmetic.

I think the OP needs to set his ram voltage manually, then add QPI/VTt starting with 1.2-1.3 and see if that helps.

If not you will need to check your socket for bent pins, if you do please take some images for us to look at to be sure.

If you take images please take them in Macro mode if possible, with no flash, in a well lit room.

Do you have a Memory Remap option in BIOS? If it is then set it to Enabled.

Might be just a defective memory module, try test them individually for a start.
