    Default Overclocking Q9550 - my experiments :)

    Hello guys, i just wanna share my research about overclocking Q9550 start from 4ghz only test with IBT, yup i know like profjim said that even pass IBT 10loop max level but sometimes fail on prime so for make sure mytest strong enough i use 10 loop max level IBT then again 10 loop max level IBT straight away at that time .... so totally 20 loop, kind of too much torture for procie yup u right
    Why am i doing double test IBT at a time? because when u see my tests in Exius thread http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...c2-6400-a.html all my test are tested only once with IBT yup it worked but when i ran double test then it all failed so i guess my setting wasnot stable ... simple like that ^_^ so now i will run double test like this :

    I'm curious about MCH, is it enough for that setting? or need more? i saw "mm67" use MCH 1.4Volt and stable ... thats why i'm still not sure how much MCH that i should use .... guys, i'm all ears to hear tips/advice from you ^_^

    Note: recently i change mycooling to venomousX RT and tested with same setting when i use cooling megahalems revB .... and the result is = same performance :(

    But if you double test like that, with 3.5GB of memory in each, how are you testing 6-7GB of memory when you only have 4GB installed?

    You shouldn't need 1.4 MCH for the above settings.

    My 2 cents:
    • Your memory is rated 6-6-6-18 @ 1200MHz.
    • Running with 5-5-5-15 timings @ 1130MHz is probably too tight when you're at 94% of the maximum rated memory speed.
    • You might need 2.0 volts or a bit higher with very tight memory timings.
    • Looser timings such as 6-5-6-15 (or 16) might be stable.
    • Manually setting tRFC somewhat lower, possibly to 52 - 60 will improve memory performance a bit.
    I agree, MCH Core = 1.40 shouldn't be needed with 4GB of memory in your system, 1.26 - 1.28 should be stable.
    MCH Core that is too high or too low can cause stability and/or boot loop problems.

    are the ripjaws very similar to the trident ,just guaranteed to work at 1200 on cas6?
    Will they go well above 1200mhz? what bandwith and latency readings are you getting in everest?

    Disregarding memory types for a minute.

    cpu ref on the board is one limiting factor
    up to 450 people are on early 1.2vmch
    450-say 470 mid to late 1.2mch
    475-500 llate 1.2V-1.4V mch approx

    Thats a generalisation but ive been running 1.4mch for at least a year 24/7 sometimes on 1.38 sometimes on 1.42.
    What the actual applied voltage by the board is I dont know.

    Limit it to quads for a minute.:anything over 1.3v solely mch generated temp increases happen.1.36-1.42 the heat generated by the mch for me goes up 5-6C under load.
    Below that mch generated heat is negligible(for me).
    Direct fan cooling of mch is a must for me at anything over mid 1.3v mch as no matter what settings im on if mch temp goes over 45C,bad things seem to happen.

    Note :My temperature probes on the mch are DIY direct reading with a variation of 2-3 degrees between the 2.
    Perhaps when my temp readout is 45C the actual core temp is peaking at 70, cant say for sure.
    The TJ of the mch is supposed to be the same as that of an intel cpu ,like 100C somehow i dont think it would be happy at anywhere near that temp tho.

    Generally tho for 4Ghz on an 8 multiplier I need 1.4V approx mch and the PC is still going 2 years later.
    Perhaps if I increased my memory voltage to say 2.25 at 500 fsb I could drop mch V by .02V,but Ive done a lot of testing some time ago at fsb speeds in excess of 500 and everything needs to be increased.

    Your cpu has a greater multiplier so you have more options around the 450-500 fsb mark.If I had ripjaws or trident ,i might experiment a bit more with ratios and cpu speed,but paying $120 for memory amd maybe a little performance increase when my own cost less than half of that when I bought it doesnt appeal much.

    Also 500(2000)fsb for quads is around the limit on air.some posters say they get more for 24/7 use but they dont hang around long.

    Whoaaaa .... sorry guys again i made mistake :( i just know last night that after all this time my setting for ram are all wrong!! i was doing some calculate about ram volt and look at SPD in cpuz now i know if i want to suse timing 5-5-5-15 i should use above 2volt for vdimm, just like prof jim said up there ... well my calculating last night even i should use 2.2volt for vdimm ... for simple example : i use auto on bios setting then look at ET6 i found vdimm was 2.2volt for 5-5-5-15 ....... i'm too much afraid to use 2.2volt since my rated ram is 1.9-2.0 volt ... so i aim for 1130mhz with 6-6-6-18 1.96volt just for safe :)

    Next i wanna keep timing 6-6-6-18 but more bandwith like 1256mhz :) and i wanna try is it stable with only 2.0volt vdimm, if not myguess is added vdimm to 2.02 or 2.04volt for sure .... am i right prof jim?

    Lsdmeasap or profjim have said before, i remember "seems like ur timing & vdimm are not correct" but i didnt listen hehehe i'm sorry for that (i guess it was lsdmeasap said)

    Did you try the Everest 4.60 to check your memory bandwidth ?
    if its possible, do that, and report the results of this test.

    Neos memory is ddr2 even tho it sounds like ddr3. Its like the only good 1200+ memory id be interested in.
    I would like to see his everest results tho sometime or even sandra for bandwidth and latency.With our chipset and quads the usual limit seems to be 9-10G/s read and maybe 10-11G/s copy and write.
    there is a small program cacheburst 32 and also maxxmem.
    Heres a ss i posted a long time ago when I had my older cpu,the new one is a little better on bwidth.

    nb you might notice nvidia hi end chipset board+AMD had better bandwidth ,which is true but that didnt make their overall performance better.
    Intel moved the mch on chip with the newer processors so i series chips are much better again especially when clocked.

    heres another older one,probably on the Q8200 also and Vista OS (64bit).Nm my mistake its the Q8400 and win 7,Im not sure what fsb and cpu speed it was,490-500 fsb probably.
    I dont have MaxxMEM installed now.

    Nothing can get away the smile of my face , about the results of EP35C-DS3R with DDR3.
    Especially at this low CPU OC .
    But its an special version of motherboard, and this explains allot. :-)
