Default After hardware upgrade, board reboots every 2 seconds

    Hi guys,

As you know I own a Gigabyte X58-Extreme board, I decided to replace my crappy core i7 920 for a core i7 950 today.

Also I replaced my enermax PSU with a brand new Coolermaster 80PLUS gold 1000w PSU.

I changed CPU's, replaced PSU, pluged PSU to board then connected PSU to power grid.
To my surprise the ligths of my apartment went down when I connected the power cable, even though master swich on PSU was off (I think). It seems I bought a faulty PSU! :(

I swiched back to my old PSU, pluged everything, now my board reboots every 2 seconds, onboard 8-segments don't change, tried clearing CMOS, doesn't work, tried unmounting CPU and RAM and GPU, board keeps rebooting every 2 seconds.

    Any ideas?

any error code on the mb led clock? still have old cpu? tried with that? tried with just one stick of ram installed in first white ram slot from cpu socket?

MB led clocks power on but don't change code, I understand if it where a GPU, RAM or CPU error (or all of them), at least there would be an error code on leds but there isn't any, all leds power on with the board and they power off with the board also, at 2 second intervals.

whould a normal operating board behave this way without a CPU? I may have bended some LGA pins without noticing, but I don't think its the case.

I haven't tried to boot from dual bios yet, as I think dual bios is an old F6 Bios, and I have a core i7 950 mounted now (could switch back to i7 920 but would like to only do that as my last option, as you know, mounting a CPU under phase change is quite complex.

i dont know with no cpu,i know it would either halt at c1 error or another code error or reboot/loop if any pins were damaged

do you have the old intel cooler to use just till you get it up and running and stable?

yeah I have intel stock cooler but board is already sealed to prevent condensation, so can't install intel stock fan anymore.

Actually I did not know that board coul reboot/loop without CPU, I thought it would at least get me a POST error.

This might be good news, sometimes on sub-zero systems, as you have to insulate hardware from condensation CPU does not make good contact with LGA board due to insulation material getting stuck between board pins and CPU, I'll clean it and get back to you.

I think I'm screwed, one pin at the center is bended :(

    AHHHHH SO UNLUCKY!

Maybe bended pins on my LGA 1366 board where the reason I couldn't reach a more stable OC on my old core i7 920.

Do you know if there is any method to straight them up?

you have to be very carefull, esp that you dont break it off as your straightening it,i straightened one pin but it was at the edge,i used a small sewing needle and pulled it back into place where it sticks up at the end of the pin,it was on an asus mb it booted fine but would only see 4gb out of 6gb,after i straightened it it was fine

post a pic of the whole cpu socket and bent pin if you can

I would hold off untill LSD has a chance to read this or send him a PM and take his advise on how to straighten them. Really any thing that is small enough to not hurt the other pins while correcting one.

They are very fragile, but you can fix them if it's not bent too bad and you have a steady hand.

Use a mechanical pencil or a needle and gently nudge the pin back into place. If the top of it is missing though you will need to RMA.

However, your power issue has more more concerned. Do you have a power supply tester so you can test your new PSU, sounds like it may have fried something if it shut off your entire apartment power.

Since you do have a bent pin though, and your old PSU back in sounds like the board may be ok once you bend that pin back if you can. You may never know if it's fried or not if you can't ever get it started, hopefully you can fix the pin and see if it will start.

A nidle and a lot of patience fixed the issue

It was indeed that bended pin that caused board to reboot before entering POST state.

Core i7 950 mounted on my board, lets push it!

I'll start a new thread for core i7 950 overclocking.

Thx for helping me out! wazza300 and Lsdmeasap you are great!
