Default GA-X38-DQ6 won't boot past BIOS splash screen

Out of the blue, my computer (using a GA-X38-DQ6) has started hanging at the BIOS splash screen (the one with the 6-quad icons.)

I get one beep, which should be OK, but it only gets past the splash screen very very occasionally. I've had to sit there re-booting 20 or 30 times to get it to work. When it does, things are a little crashy on the Windows side. I initially put it down to using Windows 7 with specialist software written for XP, but it could be related. I had to flash the BIOS to get Windows 7 working without audio glitching.

I can't enter BIOS settings. If I hit the appropriate key I'm taken to a partial page of text (with Gigabyte logo) showing a memory test. No other keys work, but I do eventually hear the beep of the keyboard buffer being exceeded.

I've tried disconnecting everything on the back - network, USB, GFX, etc. etc. I tried re-seating the GFX card and changing slots. I tried unplugging the SATA drives. Eventually it'll boot, but the same action won't relieve the problem next time. Sometimes I can get it to work by just rebooting constantly.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas?

Try t boot with one memory module.
Try with each of the modules alone in the slot it is originaly installed in.
Clearing the CMOS may not be a bad idea either see the second part in this post.

Thanks for the advice. I hope it IS the memory 'cause I just bought a couple of 2GB sticks. (I can return them if I don't use them.)

I'm guessing that because it won't progress beyond the memory check, the memory is doing something naughty. We shall see.

Hmm. A friend got a near-identical rig a bit before me and recently couldn't boot. Turns out he had PSU problems. Think that sounds likely at all from the symptoms I described?

This has been a really difficult problem to track down. Sometimes it boots, sometimes it won't boot for ages.

I thought it was the memory for a bit, but eventually both memory sticks have caused the problem when inserted by themselves. They also both passed Memcheck86.

So... A CMOS clear was the only option left (barring a re-flash, which I won't rule out.) It's worked since then, but I can't be sure it's fixed - I left my machine on just in case, as I have a bunch of time-dependent stuff to do. So I've only tried it about 3 times since then...
