I just tested and force installed the iaAHCI.inf from the F6packet, but it still installs iastor.sys as it's driver, there is no other sys file in the packet, so I suppose I did not error after all ;)

Bench was the same ofcourse as before, give or take a couple of 100's ...

Well that could mean a few things.

Maybe this program is detecting the wrong driver possibly? Does AS SSD confirm the same driver each time too?

It shouldn't. So if it is then you need to try this if you want to use the AHCI driver.

Uninstall Intel RST program totally and reboot and see what driver is used for the disk then in device manager, if it's still an Intel one choose uninstall driver and check the delete driver box and then once it's done reboot again.

Now you should be on MSAHCI, then in device manager update the driver now with the iaAHCI driver and reboot.

Then check with AS SSD and you should see the iaAHCI driver loaded, if so verify what that app shows so we can see if it's then correct or not.

You can for sure use iaAHCI.

    *Edit*

Actually scratch that, I remember now why this is! The only way you can use iaAHCI is if you begin that way, by installing the OS using the pre-install driver.

Once you do that it will be loaded, but then anytime you remove it then it will go back to MSAHCI and anytime after this if you load the RST program the iaStor driver will be used no matter AHCI/RAID set in the BIOS.

So really not worth all that hassle to test, unless you really want to. Maybe I'll find some time this week to do so, I have a empty SSD I can do it on, just need to find a few minutes.

Maybe tonight I will if I can.

I bet it will still use iastor.sys as its driver, because it's the only .sys file in on the floppy. There is no iaAHCI.sys in this packet as you can see from the screen in my previous post, so even if I would reinstall w7 and give it this floppy right from the start, it will use that same iastor.sys for raid and ahci... at some point in time I remember there where separate ahci drivers but that was on the older ich's (don't remember the exact one, but must have been ich6 or 7), but on the 9-10 'RST' series there is just the one file, iastor.sys.

I think you downloaded the wrong files? In 9.x and 10.x, all of them anywa I'm sure, there is separate iaAHCI files.

See here is the latest floppy files, and iaAHCI is included

    *Edit*

Ohh, I see about .sys, Hmm, not sure. I'll try to make time today and do a clean install using the ahci driver only and see if it still uses iaStor.sys.

Thanks for pointing that out, seems odd for sure

Yes I have the same content, but there is no iaAHCI.sys, just the inf and cat files. If you look inside the inf what's getting installed, you will spot it installs iastor.sys ... no other driver. It's all there in your own screenshot ...

btw both asssd and windows device manger say it's using iastore.sys too and the device itself is seen and named properly "Intel (r) 5 series/3400 Series SATA AHCI Controller"

Thumbs up Re: new SSD: OCZ Agility2 60GB (Extended Capacity)

    ^^ Good info, thanks.

This is my proposed Win7 installation procedure. Please post any recommended suggested changes.
Will I need to install the latest Intel INFINST drivers or will the Win7 installation automatically do this for me?
From what little I know of Win7, it appears that I won't need to install any of the Gigabyte motherboard drivers. Am I correct?

I plan to install win7 on Sunday.

    System specs:
    • P35-DS3L motherboard, ICH9 (not ICH9R), rev 1.0, bios F9
    • E6300 (R0) cpu
    • Mushkin 2x2GB XP-8500 DDR2 memory
    • OCZ Agility2 60GB SSD
    • Antec TP-750 TruePower New (750w) psu
    • MSI N460GTX Hawk 1GB graphics card
    • HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card
    • PS2 Keyboard, usb Mouse
    • AirLink101 USB wireless adapter
    Procedure:
    1. Prepare a DVD with any needed updates for the above hardware.
    2. Prepare RST v9.6 floppy for F6 installation
    3. Install unformatted SSD, my WD640 HDD will NOT be installed until after all operating system updates have completed
    4. Load saved, stable bios profile that is NOT overclocked
    5. Change SATA AHCI Mode to AHCI
    6. Save settings and exit bios
    7. Pray
    8. Boot to Windows 7 x64 Home Premium DVD using CUSTOM/Advanced installation option**
    9. Let windows format my ssd so that it will be 4K aligned
    10. Press F6 at the appropriate time to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology (v9.6) drivers
    11. Allow windows to perform all auto updates if a usb wireless adapter is installed, otherwise I will need to install these drivers from my optical drive.
    12. Disable windows Indexing Service.
    13. Perform an ssd benchmark for baseline information.
    14. Perform a 3 - 4 hour Prime95 BLEND test.
    15. Reload my current overclocked settings, 3.60GHz with 1080MHz memory speed.
    16. Perform an overnight (at least 10 -12 hours) Prime95 BLEND test.
    17. Install Avast 5.0 anti-spyware software, Zonealarm firewall software will be installed later.

Using BlackViper.com recommendations, selected windows services will be disabled soon.
Once my HDD is installed, I plan to:
    • move windows TEMP folder to the HDD.
    • move all browser CACHE folders and temporary download folders to the HDD.
    • move the win7 PAGE FILE to the hard drive. Suggestions anyone?
I'm not sure which ssd benchmark (and options) should be used. Suggestions?

** I have detailed instructions for performing this procedure when there is no previous windows installation on the system. I'm using the Windows Home Premium Family Pack which includes one license key for 3 systems.

    - I don't think you will need to use F6 floppy, w7 will know your controller and if you want you can update later.
    - You may want to partition the ssd before you start the w7 installer, if you let it do the partitioning it will create a 100m hidden/system partition and a w7 partition.
    - If you have multiple screens connected, disconnect the auxillary ones at first, or your main picture could unexpectedly show up on one of the other ones, leaving the screen you are looking at disabled.
    - I always disconnect network cable on setup, so I can set systemrestore to off before any updates are (auto)downloaded and trashing the ssd with a million update backups. This is presuming you wont need to rollback and do your own backups (using either the w7 build in or other prog).
    - Once up plugin cable and pick network "public" for now. can be set to home later on when you got protection going.

In w7 I usually first set UAC to lowest, disable system restore, install lan, run the updates, install chipset, sound, vga as needed.

oh one more tip: install from usb stick instead of dvd and enjoy a completely silent and fast setup. there is a microsoft tool around that will transfer the files from either iso or dvd and make the stick bootable. on a 4gb stick you can also put some of drivers with it, so you have them available right away. http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-U...-10972600.html

I was thinking that my first system restore point would be with all current updates applied.
Would it best to have an initial restore point before all the auto updates are applied? I might image the install before all auto updates are applied.
I can remove my sound card and wireless usb network access until I'm ready to let windows update everything.
Any reason why I don't want the win7 hidden partition on my ssd?
Good suggestion on the usb installation. For some reason I was thinking that the x64 DVD wouldn't fit on a usb stick. Duh, shame on me.
Because the win7 Family Pack is technically an upgrade, I think that I might have to perform the double install procedure.
Unrelated question, if I format my new hard drive using win7, will each partition automatically be 4K aligned? If not, I can do it with Paragon's alignment tool.

Initially I'm going to leave the pagefile on the SSD. I don't know if there's a real advantage to moving the pagefile to the first partition of my hard drive.

    Thanks for the feedback!!

***Edit*** If I do the F6 RST, I'll be using the Intel AHCI driver, correct?
If I skip the F6 RST install, will I be using the m/s AHCI driver?
Does it really make any difference?

Yeah the more you move off the more you lose the advantage of having one so there is a lot to decide. I'd say move large static files off and leave caches and page for faster access, but it will cause writes.

I would not be too afraid to use it quite normally, maybe watching out a bit for excessive writes, but not too much. Some day you just need to write gb's other days you don't so in the end it will probably be below what ocz find normal use: 20GB/day avg.

On the benches: don't use as-ssd and cdm too much, the data they write will make durawrite kick in early. on cdm do 3x50 (instead of the default 5x1000) tests with random data, and use atto for testing with zerofilled files. On the ocz forums there is a topic what to expect from benching and also a post on what's normal use according to them ...
