    Question x58-UD5 - 6970 CFX + PCI-E 4x = no go?

    Hi,

I recently purchased two 6970s and installed them. No issues there. But now my RAID controller isn't booting up. I've had the controller working in this board in the same slot for almost two years and can't figure out why now it won't work.

I'm running everything at stock speeds (ram is 8-8-8-24), bois is set to PCI-E_1 for booting. Bios is F12.

I tried playing with it last night and booted it up a couple times and either it sits there will all fans at 100% and no display or booted fine, but no RAID controller came up.

If anyone could shed some light on this that be great!

    -- Update --

    ATI drives are 10.12a R3 (dec 16th)

So playing around some more and tried a single card 3dmark 11 run: P4957 (http://3dmark.com/3dm11/327438). Which makes me think that the CFX run of P7533 is BS and the raid card or something else is messing with my results. But also tried booting with CFX and no raid card and got 100% fan, no display so board or something else isn't very happy.

The raid card is a HighPoint RocketRaid 3510 which is a PCI-E 4x card. It's been sitting in the bottom orange slot since i got this board.

Booted up this morning with single 6970 and RAID card wasn't detected, worked fine last night. Ghost in the machine or what ...

Do you have EX58 or X58A?

Please test with the very latest BIOS, test one card by itself then with RAID, then two by themselves (Be sure to try second card in PCIE_16-2 and PCIE_X8 slots) and then with RAID.

Those cards may not be able to run at the cut bandwidth, or there may not be enough lanes for both cards and the RAID card?

It is a X58-UD5 (rev 1.0 - bought at launch).

I reflashed to F12 (seems the consensus it's the best bios) and then cleared the cmos. Installed everything and it booted on the first try. Very strange, will update again tomorrow, see if the motherboard is still happy.

So booting up this morning and no raid card again.

Flashed to F13q and lost 2nd gfxs card (and still no RAID). So not too happy right now. Seems board has its own agenda. Any ideas on what do to next would be great.

    -- Update --

    Flashed backed to F12

Tried: 1 card, 2 card /w and w/o RAID5 card no go (boots with 100% fan and no display - though still goes into windows, just can't see anything.)
Switch memory around - in white (since first install), put in blue, no difference (still 100% fan and no display)
Installed 5870 and RAID5 card, boot to windows after a couple tries and no bois battery for about 30min.

I think boards on it's last legs, I'm afraid to turn the machine off now cuase might not be able to make it come back a 2nd time. Going to try and request RMA.

Memory has to be in the white slots only for 1-3 sticks, just a heads up.

It does sound like maybe something is wrong with the board, it should be fine for sure with one or both graphics cards, not sure about the RAID card also but since you have issues with 1-2 cards alone that indicates a problem anyway.

However, it very well could be because the 6970 is so new and may need some BIOS compatibility added, have you contacted Gigabyte about this?

If not please do, and to keep things simple for now just mention the 1-2 graphics cards wont work, maybe they can make you a new Beta BIOS.

Ya memory went back to the white slots (didn't make any difference anyway).

I've contact GB about the issue, we'll see what they say. I did try F13q (newest bios), but that made the motherboard not detect the 2nd card, so I went back to F12.

    Quick ending to this thread.

It would seem the RR3510 just doesn't play nice with 6970s. This was confirmed by putting in the RR3510 with 6970s with my new MIVE. It was a definite no-go.

Thanks for the update on this!

So, did GIGABYTE ever get back to you with any answers at all about it?
