Default Gigabyte GA-890FXA- UD5: Difficulty with boot from DVD

    Gigabyte GA-890FXA- UD5: Difficulty with boot from DVD<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
    Configuration: MB: GA-890FXA-UD5 rev 2.1 BIOS: Award v.600PG F3<o:p></o:p>
    Case: Coolermaster CM 690II advanced<o:p></o:p>
    PSU: Antec True Power 650W<o:p></o:p>
    RAM: 16GB (Kingston 8GB DD3KINKVR1333D3N9K8G) <o:p></o:p>
Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black edition<o:p></o:p>
    Grafikkart: MSI R5770 Hawk<o:p></o:p>
Storage:- SSD OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G on SATA 0/5<o:p></o:p>
    - WD2001FASS 2,000GB connected on SATA 1/5<o:p></o:p>
    - WD20EARS 2,000GB connected on SATA 2/5<o:p></o:p>
    - Samsung DVD Writer SATA SH-S223 connected on SATA 4/5<o:p></o:p>
    - WD 500AAKB( IDE) connected on IDE (Single) <o:p></o:p>
    - ESATA and Dockingstation on the case on GSATA 6/7<o:p></o:p>
Operating system: Dualboot : Win XP (x86) on hard disk WD 500 (IDE) en WIN 7 (x64) on SSD OCZ- 2Vertex. <o:p></o:p>
I installed windows (xp + win 7) in IDE mode because it was impossible to install in AHCI mode.<o:p></o:p>
After the installation i have changed the mode (in BIOS) in AHCI because the speed of the SSD Disk is much better.<o:p></o:p>
In AHCI mode I cannot boot up from DVD , probably the Samsung SH 223C cannot working in AHCI (I’am not sure of this). When windows is active the DVD is working normal.<o:p></o:p>
In bios a have changed the mode SATA into IDE for the SATA slots 4/5.<o:p></o:p>
In this mode I can boot up from DVD but only with a cold startup (start with the start button on the case).<o:p></o:p>
With a warm start up (restart in windows) the system start up and hangs direct after detecting the DVD device. The only way to boot up is than the start button on the case (the reset button did not help).<o:p></o:p>
    Anybody same advice? <o:p></o:p>

Yes, some CD/DVD players just will not boot in AHCI mode. All you can do is either buy another one that you know works ok, or change to IDE when you need to boot from CD then change back when you are done.

Are you using the latest BIOS?

    Thx for the answer.

No it's not the latest bios, it is version F3 (the latest is F5)
I have also asked the question to the manufacture Gigabyte. No answer Yet.

I little problem : how can i know of a dvd player/writer is working in AHCI mode?

I can not find any information about that.

The problem is really why the system hangs with a warm startup with slots 4/5 in IDE mode?

With AHCI enabled, have you tried:
    1) Remove the DVD from the boot order list in the bios. Save settings and exit to boot.
    2) Press F12 (possibly several times) while booting, just after the AHCI detection screen is displayed.
    3) Select CD/DVD device as your boot drive and press ENTER.

Sorry for the confusion, pressing F12 while booting is the way to manually select which device you want to boot from.
I'll correct my post to make this clear.

Look forward to your testing results.

Did you try F12 and choose CD or your CD/DVD by name to boot from yet, that should work?

    I received the solution from the technical service of Gigabyte.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
    1) Test if the DVD device is working correct.<o:p></o:p>
Disconnect all the harddisks: the pc must boot on from the DVD, in AHCI and also in IDE mode.<o:p></o:p>
    2) Connect only the SSD disk: the pc must boot on.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
In this case the DVD device is working correct and also the working of the motherboard is ok.<o:p></o:p>
    <o:p></o:p>
    Solution:<o:p></o:p>
Press F12 while booting and choose the last "DVD (with the type number of the device)", not the first" DVD" in the list.<o:p></o:p>
My excuse to profjim, who has given the right solution before.<o:p></o:p>
