Question Mushkin 4Gb ram kits and Kingston HyperX Kits gives error at memtest86+ on EP45-DS3R

Hello. I've been using Mushkin 996599 (2x2Gb) Kit on my system without errors. I had to upgrade my rams to 8gb. I couldn't find the same kits I had before and I bought Kingston HyperX series that was very close to the specs of my Mushkins. I removed Mushkins and tested my HyperX with memtest86+ v4.1 for 9 passes without error. The same with mushkins to be sure and no errors. But when I put them all together memtest gives one error at first pass (6th test) I guess ram kits are ok and they need some voltage tweak. That's where I need your help guys. What values should I change in BIOS?

    Sys specs.

Have you tested one pair in slots 2 & 4?
Try with advanced controls auto, MCH Core 1.26-1.32v, DRAM Voltage .2.12v.
You may also try DDR-800 CL4, might be easier to do.

yeah I tried 2-4 with hyperx. Will I get any performance drop @800? Will they work at 4-4-4-12? I'll try changing MCH voltage at first. Max voltage for Mushkins is 2.1 so I'm a bit unwilling. Thank you.

Check HWMonitor for actual applied ram voltage, it might be less (or more) than what is set.
No not realy performance loss with DDR-800. I was able to rn thos with tRD 4 at 266MHz FSB, http://i29.tinypic.com/27yzyc4.png
Run MaxxMEM² - PreView for a benchmark, or other, and see the differences.

Mixing different memory brands/models is iffy at best.
Many setups can't run 8GB at its full rated speed.
My 4GB Mushkin 996599 memory easily runs at 800MHz using 4-4-4-12 timings.
Did you load OPTIMIZED bios settings before making any bios changes?

    For starters, set:

    System Memory Multiplier .........: [3.00A] <--- 3.0 x 266 = 800MHz for now

    Standard Timing Control
    CAS Latency Time................: 5
    tRCD .................................: 5
    tRP'....................................: 5
    tRAS..................................: 15

    Advanced Timing Control
    tRRD.....................................: [AUTO]
    tWTR....................................: [AUTO]
    tWR......................................: [AUTO]
    tRFC......................................: [AUTO]
    tRTP.......................................: [AUTO]
Command Rate (CMD) .............: AUTO or 2

    Driving Strength Profiles
Driving Strength ....................... 800 or 1066 should work

    MCH Core…………….....1.100V.......: 1.28 <-- 1.30 - 1.34 might be needed
DRAM Voltage ……....1.800V........: 2.02 <-- somewhat higher might be needed
Static tRead Value......................: 6 or 7 should work

Please post your ACTUAL bios settings using the generic bios template (see link below).

Thank you profJim for the explanation. Now I'm testing the modules with 4-4-4-12 @800 @2.05 volts. No errors so far (3passes) If using them @1066 won't gain any remarkable performance I can stick with these setttings. I prefer stability over a bit performance. But if an error occurs I'll post my bios settings and we can start over again. Thanks again...

tRD(Static tRead Value in BIOS, Performance Level in MemSet) has major impact on memory performance, at default FSB 5 sould be possible with the 800 4-4-4-.12 settings.

Overclocking the FSB (but not CPU) is another option for much better memory performance.
    For example:
    300MHz FSB, CPU x 8 = 2.4GHz, memory x 3.33 = 1000, timing 5-5-5-15, tRD 6.
    or
    343MHz FSB, CPU x 7 = 2.4GHz, memory x 3 = 1030, timing 5-5-5-15, tRD 6.
    or
    343MHz FSB, CPU x 7 = 2.4GHz, memory x 2.4 = 823, timing 4-4-4-12, tRD 6.

All these should be,with some luck, easy to do, but don't rush to make them as some other BIOS changes are required to ensure all voltages are in range. If you are interested let us know.

Hello again. I stopped memtest at 5th pass 'cause that would take too long. At least my rams are stable at 4-4-4-12 @800 @2.05V. My static tread values are 7, I set them when I first booted my rig 2 years ago :) MCH voltage is 1.24 so in that case my rams are getting along with each other. To make them work @1066 will take many trials and errors I guess, so sticking with 800 is reasonable. I plan to oc when my rig's age get close to 3-4 years; I'm ok with the stock speeds right now. Thank you chike and profjim for the suggestions. Take care..

Glad I could help, come back in a year or 2 if you need help with OC.

Memtest86+ may not be enough to ensure stability as it does not stress the memory so much.
Running Prime95 blemd for 8+ hours will give greater assurance (never 100%).
Watch core temperatures with RealTemp or Core Temp, temperatures under 70c are fine.

Hmm I thought memtest would be enough :-/ Ok I'll test my rig with prime95. Is 8 hours testing neccessary? You know just 4 passes in memtest took around 7 hours today :) I have hwmonitor for monitoring temps, is it ok?
