TDP is heat output limits, but with a QX that shouldn't be a set limit anyway, plus you can always exceed that value anyhow, it's just less votlages used at lower TDP's. I am not 100% certain on that, as I never pay attention to any power saving feature

QX9650 is unlocked multipliers, but is old C0/C1 stepping, it does have higher TDP but many find lower temps. Q9650 is new, E0 stepping, lower TDP which would be cooler, and it overclocks much better but it not unlocked multiplier.

I would get the Q9650, it would be the better overclocker

    Lsdmeasap,
Would you please take a look at the thread's latest discussion Re Q9650 vs QX9650 & Qx9770 for my system and let me know what your thoughts are? Please try to start @ post #256.

The QXs has unlocked multiplier which mean they can be clocked high at low FSB, but you probably want high FSB as well and the Q9650 has multiplier of 9 which should not be a problem for 3.8GHz, and with a little luck maybe 4GHz.

    Lsdmeasap,
    Thank you for the information. I have found a "Unlocked" Q9650 and a qx9650 both are ~ $300.00 do you still think I should go for the Q9650? The Q9650 is a AT80569PJ080N QHGF ($309.00). The Intel Core 2 Extereme is a QX9650 SLAN3 3GHz 12MB socket LGA775 OEM CPU ($275.00). Also have a lead on a QX9770 SLAWM for ~$350.00
Thank you for your input, this will be the last of my upgrades for this machine so I want to "Do it right."

    Chike & Lsdmeasap,
    Here is my current Bios.
What about using these settings on the Q9650? Asside from the multiplier.

The settings might work for the Q9650, but not knowing it's default vcore, it may do more or less with the same value.
FSB should be good up to 4GHz, above 450 you'd have to sacrifice memory performance.

I would get the non Extreme version as I mentioned above, it will overclock better for you

    Lsdmeasap,
I have purchased a Q9650 SLB8W ($320.00) do you have a recomendation for BIOS setup on my GA-EP45-UD3P? I plan on doing a CMOS reset and see how fast I can get it, maybe, 3 setps. What are your recomendations?
    Thanks,
    BD
