Auto is enable if no onboard card is found.

Did you run windows update, that is where you would download the UUA driver if needed, as for finding it to remove, did you look in system devices as well as sound/games?

I had a similar issue once and it WAS due to ATI HDMI drivers installed, so remove those for sure.

Yes, had uninstalled all Realtek sound drivers, restarted and uninstatlled all Windows sound drivers at Device Manager. Installed all drives again via "Windows search through the internet" but it said all drivers are up-to-date. Then uninstalled again and use Windows Update, did not find anything.

Getting tired and decided to use System Restore back to a previous point (with sound) so I can play some games before heading to bed.

But still want to know the cure!

Is there a specific reason you want to upgrade the sound driver of a device that is working perfectly? You can't solve driver issues without spending too many hours searching. Revert to the previous driver that worked. Why update it anyway?

Do you have any issues with the standard ms sound drivers? I never install realtek/gigabyte sound drivers i find the ms ones much better in sound quality, only problem is you need the realtek drivers to enable stereo mix

Problem is if I want to reinstall the current working driver again, it will go to NO SOUND as mentioned.

There must be something very simple to fix which I do not know

Also, if I uninstall all Realtek sound drivers and go for MS drivers, it will be the same: NO SOUND

Only fix is to roll back..... just can't connect the dots

After so many attempts, I highly suspect the cause is from the BIOS.

"No speakers or headphones are plugged in" error on Windows 7 - TechNet Articles - Home - TechNet Wiki

    "Cause

The onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS. Even if you did not manually disable the onboard audio, it may have been disabled automatically when the BIOS detected a new audio device was installed. For example, if you are using onboard audio and you install a new video card, some video cards now come with audio devices built-in, often that output to HDMI. The BIOS detects the new audio device, which is actually part of the video card, and disables the onboard audio automatically. Since there is actually still an audio device present and detected by Windows, the error message reflects that you do not have speakers or headphones plugged in because you have nothing plugged into the HDMI port on the video card."

There are three sound drivers at the Device Manager. First two are for the MSI R5870 video cards and the third one is for REALTEK.

Once I disable the first two R5870 drivers, re-start and will see this massage at the speaker icon:

"NO AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE IS INSTALLED"

If I enable the first two R5870 drivers, re-start and will see this massage:

"NO SPEAKERS OR HEADPHONE ARE PLUGGED IN"

So it must be the BIOS that confuses the R5870 video cards as the sound card???

The BIOS only has the choices of "AUTO" and "DISABLE" for the Azalia Codec. When it is in "AUTO" mode, I suspect it picks the R5870 cards as the sound card.

I think if the BIOS has the choice of "ENABLE", it has to use Azalia Codec.

    What do you guys think?

Anyway, need to roll back to play few rounds of MOH Mulitplayer

The bios has nothing to do with the software issues you are facing on Windows. If indeed you want to use the on-board card you need to enable (or auto) the Azalia sound card in the bios. Then once you reboot disregard any messages and locate the HDMI sound card that is enabled by the ATI Card and disable it. A quick way to do that is remove all the ATI software and install the Catalyst again but uncheck the HDMI Audio button so this device is unused. Or you can go the hard way and locate that device and disable it. The problem is that Windows recognize two sound cards and ATI cards have the bad habbit of making their card as default. Third solution go to control panel, audio properties and change the default sound device to the Realtek card.

friends, all the suggestions have been tried. Unfortunately, still no sound.

So I think if the BIOS can "enable" and not "auto" in Azalia Codec, sound may come back.

How come it worked before but not now and I don't know . Perhaps newer drivers conflict as WAZZA300 suggested.
