Default Is my CPU temps normal or ???

    Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to review and respond to my question.

I have a NZXT Phantom case (With the following Fans:
    1 Front Intake 120mm
    2 Side Intake 120mm
    1 Rear Exhaust 120mm
1 Top 200mm Intake Fan (blows directly on heatsink)
1 Top 200 Exhaust Fan (which is closest to the front of the case)

The motherboard is a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Revision 2.

I have 6 gig of Corsair Dominator DDR3 and a EVGA GTX 480 Superclocked.

CPU is a Intel Core i7 950 which is utilizing a Thermaltake FRIO and only added the pea size amount of thermal paste for the heatsink. BTW I am only utilzing one of the fans for the FRIO

I am NOT overclocking and the bios settings are standard, or unchanged.

If i run the Coretemp utility then it reports that my idle temps are:
    Core #0: 43
    Core #1: 41
    Core #2: 41
    Core #3: 39

After I ran the 3D Mark 11 Basic then the High temps show up as:
    Core #0: 65
    Core #1: 64
    Core #2: 63
    Core #3: 62

After I ran the Prime95 (Blended tests) for 15 minutes
    Core #0: 72
    Core #1: 72
    Core #2: 70
    Core #3: 69

The ambient tempature in my home office is approx 80 degrees. I am utilizing a oscillating fan to help circulate the air.

Is this normal or should I be concerned? I have not changed any settings in the BIOs so the voltage is set to auto.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Seems right with 80c ambient temp, could set cpu voltage to normal, set dram voltage according to ram and qpi/vtt around 1.3v,that might help lower temps slightly

It's not going to be 80c ambient Wazza or the poor guy would probably be dead.

    80F = ~ 27c.

The Frio should be able to maintain a Delta T of ~16c with both fans in low mode at idle. this means that your idle temps are correct. as 27c + ~16c = ~43c.

The same config will have a ~46c Delta T at load, meaning 27c + 46c = ~73c, again matching the temps you have produced under Prime.

Apart from lowering your ambient temp (which is rather high) via air conditioning there isn't really much room for improvement. A different cooler may push temps down by a degree or so. Water cooling would be the only way to see dramatic reductions at that ambient temp. Youe instalation sounds perfect, so you have done everything right IMO.

I'd say second fan on the CPU heatsink would help as mentioned above.

And also check with easytune and see what QPI/Vtt and Vcore is being applied by auto, you may be able to lower them from what auto is setting.

Thumbs up Re: Is my CPU temps normal or ???

Thanks for the responses, based on your feedback I did add the other fan to the thermaltake frio. I will do some new benchmarks tomorrow and will let you know. I really am not too familiar with easytune but will google it and install. Afterwards I may need some help in deciphering the specific info.

+The "pea" thermal compound can cause issues, as when you put the heatsink on it may not be enough to force it to cover the whole cpu. I generally smooth a very thin layer on and it seems to work the best, I guess the only way to find out is to remove the heatsink and see if it did cover the whole cpu. Beter to know for sure.

    Hi Azmothman,

I have the same bits: i7 950, 6GB Corsair Dominator and G58A-UDR v2 motherboard, and am not (knowingly) overclocked.

Last year I was concerned that the core temps were idling in the low to mid 40's and under 100% load (video rendering) pushing 70c, so I upgraded from the Artic CPU cooler to the Notua NH-D14 Cooler. That brought the temps down by around 10c. It idles at about 35c and top is 61c.

    That was until today

I've just loaded the new BIOS FE, and my processor is now idling at just over 40c and under load around 67c.

I'm not sure whats going on - I have noticed that the temp of one of the chipsets (Northbridge?) seems lower now - its below 50c when it used to be in the high 50's all the time.

But I also see that the BIOS now defaults the i7 to Turbo mode, and so its running at 3.2MHz (24x). I didn't notice what it was before but had assumed it was 3.07GHz (23x)

Would be interested to know if you're also using FE BIOS, and whether its contributing to the heat?

    Hello,

This is to respond to the last couple posters.

Mjrhealth: When I had applied the pea size amount of thermal compound then I actually utilized a plastic sandwich bag as a glove and applied the compound over the processor to ensure it was adequately covered. Sorry that I did not mention this before and thanks for following up.

ReggiePerrin: My Gigabyte motherboard X58A-UD3R does in fact utilize a "FE BIOS". My BIOS is up to date and all of my bios settings are set to their defaults including my memory timings. For most settings I have no idea on what the settings should be and hence the reason in why everything is left to the defaults.

I do have EasyTune 6 installed and also ran CoreTemp to produce my current idle temps for your review.

    Thanks!

Question Re: Is my CPU temps normal or ???

Ok. I am a little perplexed....

My ambient temp currently is 28 C

When I am running idle then CoreTemp is indicating currently:

    47
    44
    45
    43

I ran Prime95 for an hour and it indicated

    76
    74
    73
    72

    http://i819.photobucket.com/albums/z...sofPrime95.jpg

Earlier this week the idle temps were lower than what they are indicating now and there is only a 1 degree Celius difference?

Is there anything anyone can suggest in the BIOS to potentially make the cpu cooler?

Am I freaking out for nothing?

    Thanks!
