Default Monitor / video card issue

Question for you guys, I know its off the beaten path a bit for what these forums were designed for, but I trust you guys more so then any other site.

Ive been playign RIFT lately. Occasionally, "3" times now in the 20+ hours Ive put into the game the following has occured.

My monitor goes into "sleep mode" brefily. Maybe, 5 sec. when this happens my GPU fan goes off. Then I hear the fan spool back up, and the screen comes back on. Im still in game without any error msg's. Other then the monitor going off for 5 sec, you wouldnt know anything was wrong.

Temps are good ( gpu max: 59C cpu max: 61C ) PC is in my sig. Ive never had any other issues with any other game. The only things Ive done recently is a driver update to 265.58 and the Win7 SP1 update.

Do you think this could be driver related? Im considering rolling back to the 260.99 drivers since I dont remember this happening prior.

    Advice?

    Thank you kindly.

That would be the first thing I would try... rolling back that driver. Any specific reason for updating it? If it ain't broke don't fix in imo.

You could also try the newest WHLQ driver 267.59 to see if it changes anything. According to nVidia you should not roll back graphics drivers. They recommend using "add/remove programs" and then reinstalling the old driver.

I agree, try the exact previous driver you were using and see if the issue persists or not.

If it does, that is weird! So the card fan spins down too when the monitor sleeps? Odd for sure, I was about to suggest monitor may be going bad but if the card is slowing down too I dunno - maybe the card or drivers as mentioned.

I'm using the 266.58 WHQL drivers with my MSI N460GTX Hawk with no problems when running graphics benchmarks. The MSI CD came with the 258.xx drivers that worked with W2k before I installed win7.

I've installed several different drivers, where I uninstall the existing drivers and then boot into Safe Mode where I run Driver Sweeper and finally boot back to windows to perform a full driver install.

Newer driver versions often include tweaks to improve gaming performance in some games.

I should have been more specific. I wasn't even thinking of the roll back option... but yes, uninstall the driver, re-boot then re-install the new driver...

as for booting in to safe mode and using a driver cleaner, I never bother with that step unless I run in to an odd situation.. if after the install of the new driver is no good then use a driver cleaner... otherwise don't do more work than is required unless you think you really need to.

I have had driver cleaners cause more issues than I had originally started with, so I use that as a last resort prior to re-formating.

I always do a full uninstall from add/remove programs. I also have a licensed copy of Driver Sweeper <3.

I went back to 260.99. Working like a charm, no more in game issues. Must of been cruddy drivers for RIFT. " It only happened in THAT game" *shrug*

Sticking with 260.99 drivers for now, no need to update them when everything I play runs like a champ. ;) I was going to say, it better NOT be the monitor, just got it a few months back! LED goodness!

Glad to hear that the older drivers fixed the problem.
Sometimes the latest drivers aren't always the greatest. ;)
