If the above won't help you may need to check for bent pins.

Thanks for the help. I'll check the cpu, but unfortunately it may be a while before I get to that. :(

I did get another brand ddr3 1333, and that behaved the same way, so it's down to cpu or mobo...

I got a cheap cpu to test with: a Sempron 145. Low and behold the bloody thing recognizes the memory as dual channel in the proper slots. And I've examined the original cpu (Phenom II x3 720) as closely as I can and I see no bent or broken pins. I suppose it's time to get familiar with AMD's RMA process. Hopefully that'll go quickly and smoothly?

Yes that is what I suspected after seeing this so many times. You got a bad cpu. You will want to RMA it, but will want to contact the store or seller to get it done. That's due to the AMD RMA policy. The store or seller is suppose to do that. We know your glad on finally finding the problem. Please let us know how the RMA goes.

Once you are done and get a working CPU, how much do you want for that Sempron? Shoot me a PM

I just wanted to follow-up with closure on this issue. The RMA was pretty easy: filled out info online, got ok next day, shipped it (cpu only) to Florida. About 2 days after they received it I got notice that my replacement was approved. Two days after that I got a new-in-box x3 720 from Santa Clara, CA. I haven't opened it yet as I'm having "fun" with an x2 555.

Nice to hear your RMA went smoothly!

Hit me up about that Sempron if you still wanna get rid of it cheap, I need a cheap AMD CPU so I can test for issues and learn AMD BIOS
