I'll try that - currently it is set to HDD, DVD, USB-HDD.

That may be ok, but trying as I mentioned might help.

I do know having anything before HDD can cause DMI Pool hangs, such as having CD first when you're not actually using it (If you need to boot from CD Use F12 at startup)

And Quick boot can actually cause issues as well, EuP/ErP too, so if you are using thosec test with then disable instead to be sure they are not causing you any problems.

So I seem to have a stable configuration now. The drives are not going bad - that's good.

Where I have ended up is:
Turned off the Marvell Sata3 in the BIOS. That leaves 2 Intel Sata3 ports and 4 Sata2 ports - more than enough.
My boot lag was entirely caused by the boot sequence. I've changed that to HDD only.

I also flashed to the F4a version of the bios.

After doing all of that - everything works as expected now. The vertex shows up every time now. I haven't traced down exactly what fixed it - though I suspect it might be the Marvell controller. I'll do some more checking on this at some point.

Did you test both Marvell ports with your Vertex 3? I ask because we just had some issues with X58 and certain Marvell ports

You should use Intel 6Gb/s anyway on P67, they would be the best for this drive and sorry I didn't mention that before if I forgot.

No, I don't think I tried both. For now, I'm happy leaving Marvell off. That leaves 6 Sata ports - 4 of them 3Gbs and 2 of them 6Gbs. If I buy a third Sata3 device then I guess I'll consider turning the Marvell back on then.

My system has been completely stable ever since.
