Default Question about C States on Core i7 / Xeon Family CPUS and Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Rev2.0

I got some customers that they want their systems overclocked but in the same time they dont want their computers to consume loads of electricity when idling or doing non heavy CPU/GPU Tasks. So in order to do some tests i bought a set of cpu /mobo of E5620 Cpu and X58A-UD3R rev 2.0. I noticed on CPU Features there are C1 State, C3/C6 States and the option of the driver to control the Vid/Ration from Operating Systen. Overclock works perfectly stable only to the point that i dont need to bump extra Vcore. There i got a rock solid system that consumes in idle half than with the C states disabled. My issue is when im trying to reach a bit higher clocks and i need to bump extra voltage then the system no matter what is not stable with C States enabled (Its rock solid with C states disabled). Im putting more voltage through the DVID Setting (and the vcore setting on normal). Is there any workaround for that or for higher clocks disabling C States is the only way to go?

Depends on the board, the cpu, and the bios. My system I had no issues overclocking to 4.5 ghz with all power saving turned on. After Gigabyte release a bios (dont remember what version) that The only way I could get stable with settings that I know were stable was to disable C3/c6 states. If I enable it I will get BSOD errors 124 and 101 no stop no matter what voltage I though at it. C3/c6 are not needed to drop cpu multi down and voltge.

Grab a Bios template from my sig and post your Current bios settings that you are tring and we can respond back to what may be the problem. How big of a overclock are you looking for?

You only need c3/c6 and eist enabled in the bios,c1e can be disabled, aslong as cpu voltage is on normal it will still throttle at idle,as long as you select balanced profile in win7 power saving options or minimum hardware in win xp

How far are you overclocking? I'm stable at 4.2ghz with dvid and power saving enabled,I don't use llc either
