So far I have done 2 sticks ran through memtest with no errors on cold boot. Note: after testing with memtest i would reboot and it would behave as though it was still cold boot once i got to windows, no ethernet working and no usb ports until i power off an reboot again. Last night and again this morning i tried something different, i used a different gpu, a cheap little nvidia 8400 that was hidden away. i had NO cold boot issue with the little graphics card. I'm not sure what this means, the gtx 470 has always been fine during gaming, could it really be the cause of the cold boot issue? For now I will continue testing.

Hmm, your graphics card comment makes it sound like your new card is possibly the issue, or maybe the PSU having problems pushing the larger card?

I'd test more with the 8400 and see if you continue to have good luck with that card, if so I'd say there is a problem with the newer card or something related to it.

Just want to give an update, narrowed down the memory to one bad stick, had loads of errors on cold boot using memtest86+. Right now i've have cold booted twice with the two tested good sticks and the gtx470 and no crashes or bsod. looks like the memory will turn out to be the culprit after all. I will test a bit more just to be 100% sure. any thought on what i do about the bad stick. what can i do with it? Thanks for all the help with this painfully annoying issue.

Sorry to butt in but you probably would have to rma the whole ram kit, they might replace just one stick then you would have to hope it runs well with your other two sticks as they are all tested/binned in matching kits

I'm glad you eventually got that figured out . I think I may have beaten the whole system to a tiny bit of rubble by now . I guess that on the bright side - you now know the system inside-out .

May it serve you well . :)

Nice to hear you found the problem! This is why I am always so insistent on testing each stick one at a time from a cold boot.

Good luck on a speedy RMA, or choosing new memory!
