    Lets hope for good then.
Strange other reviews I've seen show that the performa is better than the extreme, but I've noticed they didn't have the ZM-STG2 thermal paste either, though the print on the box says it's included.

Zach_, I tried for 6+ months to get my 2 / G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-4GB (8GB's)(not PI's) 24/7 stable on my EP45-UD3P 1.6 MOBO. (B and D Strap's) I tried using my E8600 and my Q9650 with no success. The RAM passed MemTest - so I don't believe the RAM was the problem. I just think they don't like running at 450 or 480 FSB's. Anyway, I upgraded to 2 / G.Skill F2-9600CL5D-4GBPI (8GB's). Instant Stability - I can run any FSB I want too - even 500 FSB. I can run MCH Ref. @ 1.1v or 1.2v and tighten RAM timings down tight. If you can find a set of the 9600 PI's - it would save you time - and your sanity.lol I know you already have your 8500 PI's - I do wish you luck on getting yor RIG 24/7 stable. By the way the 8500 RAM has been sitting on the shelf and collecting dust for more than a year. Just my 2 cents worth. wibujo

Default Re: Q9550 + EP45-UD3P, need help hitting 4 Ghz please

As expected, my system barfed at 3.70GHz.
I've settled on 3.496GHz setting with my 8GB of memory running at 874MHz with Performance Enhance = Turbo, and using 4-4-4-10 primary settings on my P35-DS3L. These settings passed MemTest86+ testing using 10 loops of the #5 test and one full 8-test loop. Windows testing started with two separate 3-loop tests using IBT and Linx with memory = 2048MB. HCI Memtest was then run for 22 hours using all available memory.

To LLC or not, that is the question. This debate will probably never end. The AnandTech link is Overclocking Intel's New 45nm QX9650: The Rules Have Changed - AnandTech. My biggest concern is that the LLC voltage spikes could do damage when using very high cpu core voltage settings.

PC2-9600 memory is 1200MHz rated and "guaranteed" to run at 1200MHz versus 1066MHz for PC2-8500.
G.Skill and a few other memory vendors guarantee their DDR2 speeds for 4GB (2x2GB) kits, but they don't guarantee the full rated speeds with more than 4GB of memory. If you go with their ddr2 1200 memory, YMMV, wibujo's results are not guaranteed! There have been several Q9550 overclocks in the forum that were stable with 4.20MHz settings with 1066MHz memory.

Glad to hear that you and Chike will be getting together, it should be a very productive o/c session.
The biggest advantage with the Zalman Performa is that it easily allows a second cooling fan to be added for a push-pull dual fan setup, which could result in several degrees of additonal cooling.

So you enjoyed my tounge in cheek "ugly" memory comparison, feel free to post an ugly cpu cooler comparison where you highlight the differences between my 100% nickel plated "pimped" Xigmatek Balder cooler (shown below) with your Zalman cooler. Be sure to point out that the Balder's almost top-tier performance runs 3 to 4 degrees (C) warmer than the best performing coolers in the BenchmarkReviews Q3- 2010 cooler comparison.

    Hehe Jim,

    Well, here goes:

    1. The Xigmatek Balder is a 3 heatpipes based solution, the Zalman CNPS10X is a 5 heatpipes based solution.

    Zalman 1 - 0 Xigmatek

    2. The Balder is a 100% nickel plated solution, the Zalman is also 100% nickel plated

    Zalman 2 - 1 Xigmatek

    3. The Zalman comes with a 2200 RPM fan that has a fan controller embedded at the top, allowing you to change between 4 different speed settings: 50%, 75%, 100% and a manual mode, and all that with a cool led for each mode:

The Xigmatek just comes with a standard 120mm 2200 RPM fan.

    Zalman 3 - 1 Xigmatek

    4. According to a Tweaktown review, the Zalman runs 1-2 C cooler than the Xigmatek Balder when idle and at load:

    Zalman 4 - 1 Xigmatek

It is clear that the Xigmatek Balder is a wimp compared to the Zalman CNPS10X Extreme :)

Thumbs up Re: Q9550 + EP45-UD3P, need help hitting 4 Ghz please

    Oh ya....
My wimpy Balder only cost me $24 after rebate, no sales tax, no shipping charges....nada

....and I can easily mount a second fan for a push/pull setup for a few more degrees of cooling if needed....
The Xigmatek just comes with a standard 120mm 2200 RPM fan.
....and it wimps out with air flow = 89.45 CFM (Max.) and air pressure = 4.1 mmH2O (Max.)
How unwimpy is your Zalman fan?

Balder is a god in Norse mythology (wiki) "The second son of Odin is Baldur, and good things are to be said of him. He is best, and all praise him; he is so fair of feature, and so bright, that light shines ...."

    C N P S 1 0 X E X T R E M E <--- that looks like something I ate in my alplabit's cereal as a kid

OK OK, so I'm a sore loser

So when are we getting an o/c update?

Hehe it's ok you gave me a good laugh again :)

Price wise, your cooler defeats me because I paid like 90 USD for it... so FAIL for me... these things are really expensive in Israel, and I don't have the technical knowledge about the fan to compete with you :)

Unfortunately, I didn't have time to meet up with Chike this week due to our national memorial and independence day, on Friday I'm also going to upgrade my GPU to the Radeon 6950 which will be unlocked to 6970 :)))

So I will only get to meet him next week for our OC session, however, today I will again try to stabilize my 3.6 OC and see how we take it from there :)

Will provide updates after that, sorry for the delay, and again thanks for all your help so far, you all gave me very good information which should help me get better results!

This thread isn't over just yet!

    OH POOP!!!
We could have done a wimpiness test with my GTX460 versus your HD5850 Xtreme.
Side note: do you have feelings of inadequacy? Extreme model gpu, Extreme model cpu cooler, hmmm....

What's the maximum resolution that you can run with your LG TV/monitor?

    Cpu: you win win easily
Mobo: P45 easily trumps P35 (my EP45-UD3P died and won't power up)
Cpu Case: Let's call it a draw
PSU: HA, Gotcha, I just upgraded to a Seasonic X-650, although your Enermax, is excellent!! It's just that my Seasonic is more excellenter.
Monitor: I think my ASUS 24" monitor comes up a bit short (pun intended) to your 42" monster.

What's the maximum screen resolution that you can run with your LG TV/monitor?

BTW, even with my too tall memory, I was able to easily mount the Balder horizontally, so that the cpu heat can be exhausted out of the top of my case which has two 140mm fans pulling heat out of the case. I won't mention how many 120mm and 140mm cpu case fans I have installed, but I can't install any more unless I get into case modding.

Default Re: Q9550 + EP45-UD3P, need help hitting 4 Ghz please

About the inadequacy, nah, it just so happens that I picked up the Sapphire Xtreme and the Zalman Extreme :)

Chike, I'm not selling my 5850, I'm replacing it for a 6950, I have a chance to add 100 USD and upgrade so I'm going for it and it can be unlocked to a full 6970 so I'm getting a 6970 at the price of the 6950 = STEAL!

Jim, my TV can display full HD 1920x1080 @ 120Hz (60Hz output, but the TV has a frame doubler which makes it look much smoother), plus, I game with the XBOX360 wireless controler + USB gaming receiver so I have the full console controller + big screen TV experience with the graphic quality and performance of a PC

About the PSU, yeah it is a very good model but I sometimes feel like I should have went for a 600W+ unit, perhaps the Modu82+ 625W model, although I'm told that my 525W can sustain the 6950 with ease so I'll stick with it for now, but the Seasonic, is one fine built PSU my friend, I just checked a review about it the other day and I might upgrade to it in the coming months, will sell my Enermax of course, plus its modular, which is so important for cable management, with my Enermax I was able to achieve a very clean look inside my case with all the cables going in the back and just popping out into the motherboard :)

    EDIT:

Just read this about my PSU:

Wow! What a power supply! We could not only deliver its labeled 525 W power at 50 C but also maintained efficiency between 85% and 90% all the time! In fact this is the power supply with the highest efficiency we reviewed so far. Not only that. We could pull almost 600 W from this unit still with 85% efficiency. That is impressive.
600W with 85% efficiency, that's not too bad for a 525W PSU! Maybe it can do CF after all? It does have a Crossfire + SLI certified logo on the cover :)

My case has 3 built in 3 speed adjustable 120mm fans, top, rear (Just behind the Zalman cooler, which means that the heat exhausted from the Zalman is directly exhausted by the rear fan, they are perfectly parallel, could have also mounted it horizontally, but it wouldn't look as cool...) and one to cool the PSU on the bottom, and I added another 120mm Scythe fan in the front to provide more airflow onto the board and GPU, so overall I got 4 120mm fans cooling it and my Zalman unit to cool the CPU.

I was actually surprised that the Zalman left room for the UD3P heatsinks, at first when I bought it I didn't know if it will fit but to my surprise it fits in perfectly and I could have also mounted a second fan if it was possible.

    :)
