Default GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5 No boot Post code FF

I shipped my computer through UPS and received it, to my horror, that the video card and heatsink were dislodged. I packed the inside tightly with newspaper, which has worked several times before, I guess this time is an exception.

I took everything apart and checked for any damage. I couldn't find any physical damage to the card (GeForce GTX 260), mother board (GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD5), CPU (I7 920), or heatsink (Cooler Master V8). I guess 2 of the screws on the Heatsink weren't properly seated, and were ripped out. I cleaned everything and reapplied thermal paste.

I powered up and instantly the fans went to max power. Then post codes went through its normal steps and reached FF but there's no output to the monitor. The fan on the video card is running. I have no other video card to test if the card is the problem.

    My questions:
    1. If the video card is broken, would the mother board know and post an error code?
    2. The hard drives are not plugged into their original SATA ports, does this matter?
    3. I seem to recall seeing a thread with all of the post codes listed but I can't seem to find it, can someone link me to it?

    Thanks

Sorry to hear about your problem. Here is the link for the post codes its always in LSD's sig but here you go Gigabyte Award X58 BIOS LED Debug Codes

It sounds like possible bad video card, but I would try clearing cmos first. I had 1 video card die on me and I tried it in 2 system and neither would boot. I dont remember the code that it stopped at.

Do you know someone you might be able to borrow their video card or test yours in their system?

FF code means its booted without error,if clearing the cmos doesn't fix it clean the gold contacts on the graphic card with alcahol or a pencil erasure and inspect them for any damage, try the card in the other pcie slots, soundslike the gpu is damaged or the mb would post gpu error at boot up

Most computer companies ship pre built computers with the gpu uninstalled to avoid damage in the post, then the purchaser just installs it themselves,so its worth noting in the future

So I tried a different PCI slot, same result although it restart on its own once or twice. The card was blocking the LED so I couldnt read if it reached FF or not. I tried the clear cmos button, but i wasnt sure if there's a specific way to do it. does the computer need to be off? do you hold it for 10 seconds? I tried them all anyway, no result.
I also tried booting without the card all together and it solved the fan issue. It booted up quietly and reached FF, I could also here the harddrive spinning up, which I couldn't before. I really wish I had a spare video card or motherboard that could fit the one I have, unfortunately I'm the only "tech savy" person around.
    Any other suggestions?
    otherwise, I guess I'll start shopping. :(

To clear cmos the system needs to be turned off. just pressing and releasing the button is good enough for a quick reset. You can try extended clear by using a jumper on the clr cmos jumpers on motherboard for upto 20 min or longer. I dont think that will fix it if the quick clear didnt work. If your PSU has a couple PCI-e connectors try using a different set.

Does the gpu fan go to 100% when powered on and stay there or 50%, go 100% then backs down?

You can remove mb battery for 30mins to clear cmos too, just pinch the metal clip and the battery will POP up,any damage to the gpu's power connectors?

BTW it will boot up and display the bios screen without any hdd's installed

Wazza: there is no visible damage to the power connections nor the PCI contacts. Nothing seems to be rattling around inside when I shake either.

I was over at a family member's house and noticed their computer had a PCI-e port, unfortunately the power supply for their computer doesn't come with a PCI-e power cable. So close...

I think your gpu should have came with a 4 pin molex to 2 pci-e adapter if not they are cheap to pick up.

can you use their video card to try in system? what video card do they have?
