Question Need help with simple OC : E7300 + GA-EP45-DS3R

    Hi,

I'm looking for some help. I really want to get some extra performance out of my system because unfortunately I can't afford anything better at the moment. A couple of years back I bought this system with the intention of overclocking it, only I never came around to do it. Mainly because I just don't know how to or where to start, it's all a bit overwhelming to be honest. I tried to get into it but this kind information just won't stay in my head for some weird reason.

Seeing that when I first got the system someone over here really helped me with my memory timings (Setting timings on GA-EP45-DS3R) I hope maybe you guys (or girls) can help me out one more time, if not so be it and I will just have to make do with what I got. (No hard feelings off course).

I've tried to supply all the info is needed according to your other topics around the forums, if there's anything else needed I will off course try and provide it.

I'm not looking for a superbump in performance just what is possible without doing any extreme or crazy stuff. Hope you guys can help, thanks in advance.

    My current system and settings:

    CPU = E7300
    Motherboard = GA-EP45-DS3R, I think is rev. 1.0 but I'm not sure

Did you have to set MCH Core to 1.3v or did you just set the upper value suggested in the other post?

I suggest starting with 333MHz FSB and no OC to the CPU, then try higher Ratio.

Begin with these settings then try higher CPU ratio, 8.5, 9, up to 10 or max stable with default vcore(Normal).
Run a baseline, IBT/LinX test 5 or 3 runs, with 1536MB memory, and current BIOS settings. This wil later help determine if there is enough vcore.
Before you start windows run a pass of memtest86+, Then IBT/LinX again, then Prime95 blend torture for 8+ hours.

Few things. Please put your specs in your sig so we have quick reference o them from now on.
I see your ram is rated 2.0v but your running it at 2.1v... Why?
also your mch core doesn't need to be that high, id say 1.24v or lower.

do you have the required stability testing software? Ie- prime95, intelburntest and linx?
    coretemp and cpuz and hwmonitor?

haha chike beat me to it.

    Hi Sean,
Yeah I've noticed that to, I bought the RAM from this site ALTERNATE. Hardware - Software - Entertainment (in dutch by the way) and there it states 2.1, I think the original GEIL packaging also had 2.1v on there but I'm not sure to be honest.

Should I first try and lower the MCH voltage before I proceed with your settings Chike?
Yeah I've got all the programs + a bootable CD-rom with memtest.

start with chike's settings and try a lower mch voltage. Start with memtest. I can tell you right now, I am running at 463 FSB with ram at 1111MHz and I only need 1.26-1.28 MCH voltage.

for that ram on the Geil website the specs say 2.0v - I would turn down the DRAM voltage to 2.0v and memtest at 800mhz, if it is stable then it will save you some stress and heat. But if it does say 2.1, then you know you could push it a little further in the future.

It realy depands on the ram, but you will probably get away with much less MCH Core at 333MHz FSB.
I only need 1.18v at 450MHz FSB with 2x2GB at DDR-1080, for 4x1GB you may need more.
See what voltage is programmed in the SPD, if it has EPP profile. If the package said 2.1v go with that, you may also check the sticker on the ram itself.
You can start by lowering MCH Core or my settings, not much of a difference.

I'll check this inside of the case tomorrow to get a definite verdict on what kind of voltage I should be using. I tried a couple of settings like you guys mentioned. but first I lowered the MCH Core to 1.24V. It runs like before I can't notice a difference. All the other tests I used that setting.

In SPD it reads 1.8v!? (See screendump)

    Testing:
8,5x333Mhz = no problems at first sight (memtest + linx)
9x333Mhz = no problems at first sight (memtest + linx)

At 9.5 X 333 Mhz I'm starting to run in to trouble, as you can see from the screendump it gives an error after a couple of minutes of stress testing with Linx, Memtest (boot up) finishes without any problems though. Is this a good or bad sign that I'm already running in trouble?

I also tried 10x333 Mhz, memtest again finishes without a problem but after windows (xp) starts it automatically reboots. Is there a next step or am I stuck at 3Ghz?
    Thanks in advance.

There are only standard JEDEC profiles for this memory, no EPP.

Can you post IBT results for 333x9.5?
What tRD(Static tRead Value in BIOS, Performance Level in MemSet) set for?

Run an overnght 8+ hours Prime95 blend on those settings, and you can save a BIOS profile(F11 at main BIOS screen) for max OC at normal vcore.
Then we will move on to 400MHz FSB for real OC(this was "simple" OC).

EDIT: BTW there is a newer version of CoreTemp that records min and max temps, you can d/l it from the program sticky.

It was at 7 and I changed it down to six this morning (like you stated in one of your earlier posts). Memtest and Linx/IBT don't give any errors after that change @3.0Ghz.

See screendump, I do have to say that I did get some errors once in a while. But in the end both Linx and IBT worked flawlessly. I run the tests multiple time on multiple reboots.
That's probably not considered stable is it?

Haven't had time to do a long run with prime95 yet, I can do it this evening. First preliminarily tests did look good though.

    Yep got it now.

Oh and last but not least I opened up my case and the sticker indeed says 2.0v on the memory! should I try and change that down (and run tests) before we continue?

Huh I only just noticed that my speed in the last screendump was 3.8Ghz, how the heck that happened

EDIT:Check another screendump with an error and the same crazy thing. Only at 4.4Ghz. I sometimes see the frequency multiplier jumping around from x9.5 to for example x11.5 or even x13.5!
    I'm probably doing something wrong...

I by the way just lowered the memory voltages to 2.0v, and the PC boots without any problems.
