    As per Chike's request, I have started a new thread and gathered the following info.

    I've been reading through overclocking guides to understand terms and to have a better idea of what changes I will be making, but I wouldn't want to damage my components or cause too much degradation (I hope this computer will last another year). Thanks for any input provided, I greatly appreciate it. While I don't consider myself new to system building, OverClocking has been a foreign art until recent. I figure this box has plenty of life left in it and good tweaking will keep it relatively current with my demands.

    I don't know about the dual core thermal sensors but 56c seems wuite high for idle, especially with the DK cooler, unless there is some problem with the reading. Try RealTemp as well. Which thermal paste did you use and what method to apply it?

    RealTemp reported same (56C). SpeedFan screen shot below along with the BIOS photo as well (PC Health Status).

    PC Was built Spring 2009 and I used either Arctic Silver Ceramique or another Arctic Silver 5 (can't remember which, but I have both lying on the shelf). I seem to remember just spreading a reasonable amount with my finger until no portion of the CPU was showing ~1mm thick and I didn't notice any bubbles, 'gooping' or bleeding out onto the board.

    [UPDATE] Apparently that's the temperature unless there's some other issue. Linux results below.

    It's worth noting (and perhaps I should get these readings from Linux as well) I am having an issue with a Windows process going on the fritz and occasionally using 100% CPU. I checked Process Explorer and it seems like a service, driver, or system extension (not a program). Anyway, I'm still currently tracking it down and I'm not sure if it's appropriate to discuss it here. I could always start another thread on an appropriate site/section.

    Those temps are too high, See wha can be done about it before you OC.
    First test with the case open and room fan blowing over it, if temps are the same, perhaps you need to re-apply thermal paste.
    AS5 should be sufficient.

    About how long should I run OCCT's OCCT test with a Dark Knight on an E5200 to make a difference in temperature? After 10 minutes of ~100% CPU utilization there was absolutely no change whatsoever (56C). I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2 for hours on end with this OS/BIOS configuration for the better part of the year, system seems stable and haven't had any awkward or frequent crashes (some are to be expected with that game). I wish I would have recorded temps at one point (and frequently too!) but it makes me think I have a stuck sensor. Also ran Real Temp's Sensor Test (Prime95 based) and the results were not very promising :

    Can you run IntelBurnTest? Found in the overclocking testing programs sticky. Run 5 tests standard of IBT and monitor your temps with realtemp or coretemp while it is running. If the temps dont fluctuate, you've got stuck sensors.

    Not very promising, looks stuck to me.
    Is this a guarantee or should I do some more testing? Where would I go from here... Contact Intel? Try to fix the sensor?

    Update: After some research I've learned that sometimes they freeze at low temps as it's designed for shutting down at high temps and doesn't always report well at lower temps. I'm wondering just how long I'd have to run (any) of the tests to determine if my processor sensor has a serious issue (or is functioning mostly by-design) without burning anything out.

    Check out BenchMarkReviews - Best Thermal Paste Application Methods for HDT Cpu Coolers for the best TIM application method for your Dark Knight cpu cooler. Your Dark Knight cooler is very similar to my Balder cooler; both are HDT coolers with a flat, nickel coated surface at the base of the cooler. Wet sanding the base is not required with these coolers, but the gaps in the cooler base need to be filled before applying two thin lines of thermal grease.

    I use Ceramique exclusively, using AS5 should provide similar results. Applying anything near 1mm of TIM is way to much. The goal is to use the minimum amount necessary to fill in tiny irregularities in the cpu/cooler surfaces.

    "Normal" stuck sensors result in the displayed core temps not going below a certain level. My lowest dual core readings are 40 and 35 degrees. My Prime95 core temp readings are about 52 (C) and IBT or LinX readings are about 61 (C). Your CPU and SYSTEM temps look good. It's possible that your cpu core temps are permanently stuck at 56 (C). I don't recall seeing this with other systems.

    You should remove your cooler and thoroughly clean all TIM from the cpu and cooler and then apply thermal grease using the BenchMarkReviews HDT technique.

    Thanks. Is there an effective way to better diagnose my core temp sensor issue? It really does seem stuck. A Google search has shown that while rare, it does seem to happen. I honestly can't remember the exact amount applied, but now that I look at your link it probably was on the thick side. I will work on reapplying the TIM tomorrow after I wake :)

    In the event it is stuck and is irreparable, should I just refer to the other (accurate) readings or should I consider the possibility that my CPU has other issues?

    I would contact Intel to see if permanently stuck sensors are a reason to have your cpu replaced under warranty. In the meantime watch the cpu temperature reading, as it should rise and fall with the core temps. The cpu temps will be lower than the core temps. You could try a short 5 minute IBT test where the cpu fan is unplugged and your cpu is passively cooled by your Dark Knight cooler. I suggest trying this test after you have cleaned and reapplied the correct amount of TIM.

    Check your bios to verify that CPU Thermal Monitor 2 (TM2) is enabled.
    You can try disabling C1E and EIST, but I don't think that this will change your core temp readings.
