WOL has very little to do with the OS. The OS maybe able to enable or disable this feature and that's about it.
When magic packet is set to wake up the computer it should look as described in Wake-on-LAN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It should be that simple, but for some reason I have trouble only this system. With other systems new or old I can wake up from win7 or xp. Wonder if there is some bug with the bios and may need flashing

If you are not running the latest bios i would highly recommend that. Also I believe LSD also made a modded bios for the ud7 with updated lan rom. You can try searching the bios sticky page for it. If you cant let me know and I could mod you one.

Here's that latest BIOS I modified for the UD7 (F8)
    X58A-UD7 F8 Mod.zip

    F8o here
    X58A-UD7-F8o.zip

I don't use this feature, but I could test for you if needed I think. Just give ma a quick run down of how it works, what I need to do, where to get the program you use, ect - and I'll test.

You stated the leds are off while other systems they are lit.
Try to set WOL & Shutdown Link Speed, under adavnced NIC device options to 100, see if this help.

I will read up on flashing the bios...little weary about flashing with MOD one. Is this risky?

BTW, my bios version is FB

If you could test it out for me that would be great. I would very much appreciate that.

Below is the quick run down:

    on X58A-UD7 motherboard system:
    - enable "PME Event Wake Up" on the motherboard under Power Management Setup
    - on the OS, check "Allow this device to wake the computer"

On the system that you will be using to wake up the X58a system, this system need to be on win7, install "Advanced IP Scanner" and use it wake up the X58A system just from sleep. If it is successful, try waking it up from shutdown.

Let me know if you have any luck.

Thank you very much for doing this.

Tried this, but did not make any different. Even though the led on the NIC is not lid, the led on the switch is. Actually I saw someone on this forum mentioned that so I had a look, sure enough that is the case.

Well I dont have the UD7 but I did the same test and was successful. Couple notes.

Set "PME Event Wake Up" to enabled also set "Allow this device to wake the computer" along with Allow Magic Packet. Set windows7 (x58 system) to sleep. Used Server 2008 RC2 (ep45-ud3p) to wake up the X58 system with Advanced IP Scanner. = Success.
Set X58 system to shut down. Used the ud3p to startup X58 = Success.

Set ErP to Enabled (this setting disables PME) also set "Allow this device to wake the computer" along with Allow Magic Packet. Set x58 system to sleep used ud3p to wake up x58 system = Success.
Set x58 to shut down. Used ud3p to start up x58 = no success.

This is with a old bios but has updated Lan Rom.

Flashing the bios is risky but you will be fine if you follow directions. Read this thread to learn how to flash with Q-flash. http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...ash-guide.html

If you flash with q-flash and it complains that the bios you are trying to flash with is larger in file size. (2048kb instead of the old 1024kb) You will need to flash the new bios with @bios in windows.

Either way you flash make sure you "DO NOT KEEP DMI POOL DATA" in Q-flash disabled "keep dmi pool data" In @bios you have to check the box "Clear DMI pool data"

Once bios is updated to that latest bios, You will want to copy the new bios to the back up bios. To do this at Post hold the "ALT" key + "F12" together.

    Edit

Also noticed lights on the lan port would go off while the system was either asleep or shut off but still turn on from WOL.

I just installed Advanced IP scanner on Server 2008 R2 on the a vmware on the same laptop that I'm running win 7 that I having trouble with, from this server 2008 I have no problem waking up x58a from sleep and shutdown state.

Can you please test from win7? I have no trouble waking up x58a from server 2008 and XP, win7 is the only one I'm having trouble with.

For bunch of pc's and laptops, I have no trouble waking them up from any of the windows os's.

sad to say but Success. Installed win7 in Hyper-v actually and installed Advanced IP scanner. Shut down the X58 and then Told it to start up and it did.

Maybe Has something to do with ud7 hardware/bios?? I don't know. Maybe LSD can still try if he hasn't already or when he can (He a very busy guy). Maybe someone else with ud7 can try.

I highly recommend updating the bios if you have not already. If it still does not work then depending on LSD/others, you may want to submit a ticket with Gigabyte Tech support. Tell them they exact problems and things you/we have tried. See if they can test or pass along to bios engineers.
