MCH Core 1.24v appears to have done the trick, am back into Windows now. Windows was corrupted but startup repair managed to get it up and running again. Will restore from backups soon.

The G110 backlight and num-key always on issue was also fixed () by booting into Windows.

Edit: Nevermind, swapped to the other Gigabyte port and all's well again. Somehow one port's not working, will have to recheck the connections.

Run chkdsk too before you restore.
Just consider you may not need the whole 1.24v MCH Core, once you have everything checked and running you can try lower and run stress tests.
Aftermarket CPU coolers change the air flow. A side fan that blow towards the NB heatsink can help reduce temperatures.

Thanks, will do that. Just wanted to get some stuff done on Steam before the events end :-)

Yes, I was looking at it today and considering getting an Antec Spotcool (http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/product.php?id=ODA=) for it. The DIMMs have the Corsair fan included with the RAM on them so they should be ok.

    Looks neat.
    You not interested in overclocking?

Hahaha, funny you should ask. I was about to come to TT to ask about that, before this episode with the RAM errors. Now I'm not sure if it's a wise idea...

Essentially, I've been running stock since Nov 2008. I'd like to upgrade my HD4870 with a beefier current-gen card (6950 or 560). I heard to get better performance out of them I should have a 3GHz+ CPU. So my plan was to ask how easy it would be to OC my Q9550 (I assume via an FSB OC?). So if I do decide to go ahead with the OC, do I need to do anything to safeguard the NB/MCH and DIMMs? If I OC, could I still have the power-saving features enabled?

Thanks for all your help on resolving this issue Chike; and profJim as well. Much appreciated.

The 9550 may do 3.2GHz with stck voltages, or even 3.4GHz. Souldn't be difficult to get it to 3.8GHz, all depends on temperatures.

I'd be happy with 3.2GHz for a start. Would it be best via the BIOS or GB program like ET6?

BIOS, we only use ET6 for monitoring/confirming settings.
