Exclamation Multi Word DMA mode 2??

OMG, this is crazy. I just noticed that one of the WD Caviar Blacks (1TB) on my system is running at Multi-Word-DMA Mode 2!
Actually for the past little while I was wondering why it was so slow!
Not sure when it started; could have been when I upgraded from Samsung DVD-RW to LG BD-RW, or maybe when I upgraded BIOS to F14P.

So this is my current IDE configuration:

    All sata devices

Sata 0: LG Blu ray writer @ Ultra DMA Mode 2
Sata 1: WD 1001FALS <-- running at Multi Word DMA mode 2 & SUPER SLOW!
    Sata 2: empty
Sata 3: WD 1001FALS <-- running at Ultra dma mode 6, appears to be running at correct speed (i.e. fast)
    Sata 4: empty
Sata 5: External WD10EADS on eSATA @ Ultra dma mode 6, runs fast.

    EX58-UD4P, Bios F14P
    Win7 x64 SP1
    AHCI enabled

    Please help!

How is it that AHCI enabled and you have them in IDE mode?

    Hi,

I'm reporting what I see in Win7 Device Manager. I'll send screenshots of it when I go home, I'm currently somewhere else.

FYI Intel Matrix Storage Manager is NOT installed, so this is the standard default Microsoft AHCI drivers

Also your "OS" drive should be on sata port 0 followed by all other hdd's and then finally your dvd drives in ports 5-4

So, I basically "solved" this issue. Posting this as a public service message. ;)

Basically, when you use the Microsoft built-in AHCI driver in Windows 7, under certain conditions it will DISPLAY the wrong DMA transfer mode in device manager. So although it displayed "multi word dma mode 2" for my WD1001FALS, it was actually running in full Sata 300mbps mode.
The drive felt slow to me because i hadn't defragged in more than 6 months, and I had less than 50GB free space! Pretty much every single file on the drive was fragmented all over the drive!

A benchmark run of HD Tach showed it to be running at full speed. After deleting the partitions and re-formatting it, it's performing like a 7200rpm SATA drive should perform, and with 0% cpu usage, so i'm happy.

But to be safe I moved my Blu-ray writer to my Gigabyte SATA controller anyways, and i'm running that in IDE mode. So it's completely off the ICH10R controller. Will only use that controller for hard drives and SSDs (future).
