Try MCH Reference up 1-2 steps, then try CPU Reference 1-2 steps above and below default if no go.
Try both with MCH Core 1.26v first, and CPU PLL one notch above default (1.55 or 1.57)

EDIT: yes if VTT is 1.2 there's no problem, you only need to set it 1.2 to make changes if it is set to a higher/lower value.

That's got me completely confused now - should I switch them around?

Tested one at a time, with the other being on Auto.
    MCH Ref up - 0.8V and 0.84V - 5 seconds in Prime95.
    CPU Ref up - 0.785V and 0.8V - again, 5 seconds.
    CPU Ref down - 0.745V and 0.73V - lasted about a minute.

Try less CPU Reference to the point it gets worse. Then MCH Ref again up/down 2-3 clicks.
At the most stable point, if not completely stable, try to increase VTT.

May have just been getting lucky, couldn't find anything close to stable just then. All over the place trying higher and lower CPU and MCH combinations.
The best I could get was CPU Ref 0.73V and MCH Ref 0.74V, lasted 7 minutes. Bumping the VTT up by one completely destroyed it, three cores failed in a few seconds.

LOL this is frustrating, could be just random it lasted 7 minutes if it fails on the same FFT. Are you testing the 720k or just plain blend torture?
Try increasing tRD(Static tRead Value) one notch and then loosening timings if this doesn't help, 8-9-8-24, 8-9-9-24,and 9-9-9-24.

I was testing on 720k. No luck with any of the above timings either, still falls over in under a minute.

TBH I think I'm happy with where it's at now. 1380 8-8-8-24 is a huge jump from where I began at 1066 9-9-9-24.
Thanks for taking the time to help.

I was hoping it would do 2800(400x7) and DDR-1600 at stock vcore.
If you ever feel you need more from it, there is a F4h BIOS in the BIOS sticky dated ‎3/‎11/‎2010, maybe that can make a change.

I had no idea about the new BIOS, the gigabyte website only had f4c listed :o
Anyways, I flashed that in and it can definitely go higher now, 1600 posted once, but froze then threw me into a boot loop again.

The 1424 I tried earlier works fine now, half our of prime 720k FFT worked no problems, so I started bumping things higher until I ran into problems.

I'll post everything again because some settings and memory timings auto'd a little differently this time round:

364 is stable so far but I'm still testing, 368 was fine in Prime for half hour but froze during IBT.
I've also had my system clock reset to the year 2099 a couple of times now, little weird. Avast shat itself when that happened :(

At Feb. 2010 there were lots of BIOS releases with enhanced memory compatibilities so I thought it's worth a shot.
Did you uncheck the keep DMI Data when you flashed the BIOS?
See if you can use tRD 7 or at least 8.
If the 1424 settings are stable blend try using 8 CPU Ratio instead 7.5, if this works we'lll try 400x7.
Actually you can try it anyway:
    FSB 400, CPU x7.0
    SMM 4.00D or 4.00B timings 9-9-9-24
tRD 0 for a start then try lower..
