My bad, it failed to find an error is what I meant. So it passed the vista memory test.

Just before you run to the store, try to clear CMOS.
Turn the PSU off or disconnect from the wall, discharge the capacitors by pressing the power button once, take the battery out, and short the CLR_CMOS pins for 30 minutes. Remove the jump, and place the battery back in, power up, enter BIOS and load optimized defaults.
If this alone doesn't help try to disable XMP(in BIOS M.I.T)

I ended up taking it to a cpu repair shop. They are telling me the hard drive is loaded with viruses and I need to reformat and reinstall windows. I don't want to lose all my files on this cpu, and furthermore I don't think they are right. Opinions?

Since you cannot run ubuntu from the CD I don't think it matters if you have viruses on the harddrive or not.

yeah I was wondering how they knew it has viruses when they can't even get it to boot.

I'm thinking of getting a new hard drive and putting a fresh copy of windows on it. Then maybe I could hook both hard drives up with the new one as the master and the messed up one as the slave. Would this allow me to access the dump files and try to see what the problem is? Or at least let me back up the things I don't want to lose from my old hard drive?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
