In case you find your homework assignment too easy, check out GA-EP45-UD3P - Won't boot with 450FSB, where D-an-W overclocked his E8400/EP45-UD3P system, starting in May 2009 and ending in December 2009.
    Some thread statistics:
    • viewed 38,951 times
    • it is the fifth most viewed non-sticky thread in the Gigabyte forum
Feel free to ignore the posts where Dan was tweaking and overclocking his kitchen and bathroom
Toward the end of his odyssey, his very highly overclocked system passed 24 hour Prime95 (blend, small FFT, and large FFT) tests only to fail with the most demanding stress test of them all, the dreaded system at idle stress test that resulted in BSOD's. I'm not kidding.

There is another thread OCing the same CPU and board, we need to get ahead of them :)

    Hmm, Deafty here,.

    Like what you're doing.
    I'm currently sitting on 3.645GHz (9x405)

The biggest differnece between you and me I believe are our ram modules.
For me this makes it a tricky comparison with your settings.

Perhaps I could ask Chike for a word here?

I can't shoot for an extreme O clock for the risk factor involved but am keen to get to 4GHz

What you think Prof Jim? Are the gloves off now or can we all work together

    Work together?!!?
Oh well, if you insist, why not.

BTW, there isn't a major difference with the memory. Chike took one approach and I took a different approach with ram speeds and timings.
Deafty's memory should be perfectly stable at 1066 - 1080MHz with looser (5-5-5-15) timings. In 98% of programs and games, there's virtually no difference in overall performance with 800 - 875MHz with 4-4-4-12 timings and 1050 - 1080MHz with 5-5-5-15 timings. My approach doesn't require as much tweaking with the system memory multiplier to keep memory speeds within a stable range. The main problem I see with Deafty's setup is that his computer case provides minimal airflow for case cooling that will probably limit his overclock somewhat, even though he's using the Mugen 2 cpu cooler. A minor fly in the ointment might be that he wants to run with 6 or 8GB of memory, but this shouldn't be a problem.

In Dan's long thread, there were several other members with similar setups and the other members had some major issues that Dan didn't have to deal with.

Not sure his memory can clock that high, I have a pair of 2x1GB Corsair XMS2 and they couldnt clock above 1000.

Thanks Chike, I thought that he was using 2 x 2GB of 1066 memory, not 800MHz memory.
In Deafty's thread when he asked about an additional set of 2 x 1GB, I said that mixing memory sizes might be problematic.
I originally felt that Deafty would have an easier time with using 800MHz settings as a starting point.
With 2 x2GB of CL4 800MHz memory, his MCH Core will propably OK for now with 1.20 - 1.22 volts while we're under 900MHz memory speeds.

I feel like a ping pong ball bouncing between and posting in both threads.

In case you missed my post in Jake's thread, first one to 4.50GHz stable is the winner.

Encouraged by the OP memory performance I went and tried 463MHz FSB with SMM 2.40B tRD 8.... and it boots!
Not only it boots it pass memtest86+ and starts windows.... so far so good. More testing now.
