Default Upgrading GA-P35C-DS3R CPU to Q9550, CPU Fan, memory suggestions

    (Latest update see post 13 - installed DDR3 2x4GB concern about 1.63v ) added

The bios update suggestions helped me to successfully update from F2 to F12 via USB flash drive. That's how I found this forum using Google search after unable to update bios using @Bios. Thank you.

I now want to upgrade CPU to Q9550 bought used without fan. Need suggestions for a not too expensive fan $20 to $35 max
(not a gamer and will use mostly for multitasking video software and others. Future goal to to overclock a little like 3.2 Ghz and keep safe without too much stress)

    Memory
I have read some where that some have successfully used 2 x 4GB 1066 DDR3 memory but 1333 can be a problem (upgrading DDR2 from 2 x1 GB to 2x 2 GB will cost at least as much if not more.)
Do you think this will work? $42.99 at a top online retailer.
    [ Ripjaws] F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL (4Gx2)
    DDR3-1066 8GB(4GB x 2) CL 7-7-7-18 1.5 Volts works with P35 chipset

    See signature for current configuration
Bought this used computer from a college student for $350 then added BluRay burner, PCI 800i tuner, and all external items below plus another int500GB 7200 HDD not listed

Also bought a OCZ Solid 3 SLD3-25SAT3-60G 2.5" 60GB SATA III MLC $59.99 with rebate. Don't know what I will do with that yet maybe experiment with another OS like windows 8 beta

Any suggestions/llinks appreciated 64 yrs old been tinkering with computers for 20 years but will have a friend do the install of the CPU and fan. Carpal tunnel makes that a little to difficult

    Thank you,

Check Newegg.com - ZALMAN CNPS10X Performa 120mm Long life CPU Cooler, valid only for one more day.

Personally I think it's a waste of money investing in C2Q, how much did the Q9550 cost?
Whe did you bought this PC, how much did it cost including the Q9550?

If you have a working memory, be happy with it. You may spend lots of bucks on DDR3 just to find out it's not compatible with the board. 4GB is enough for gaming and home use, unless you do video.audio editing there's probably no need for more.

Thank you for suggesting the ZALMAN CNPS10X Performa 120mm Long life CPU Cooler, think I will order that on NewEgg unless someone else suggests a cheaper one that will work good. Thinking of getting Arctic Silver 5 on eBay

because all I had 7 months ago was $350 total to spend for a computer. Windows 7 ultimate came installed plus a MS OS disc with seal holograph and sn. Prior system was a P4 2.4 2 GB ram win xp pro system. SAMSUNG HD501LJ 500GB also came with the system

Q9550 paid $150 used. Should get about $50 to $60 for used E6750 with stock fan on eBay.

Ram 4GB x 2 =$42.99 can always sell used on eBay for about $30 if it doesn't work. I will be doing video audio editing see software in signature. Have much more video & audio software not listed and will also be experimenting with virtual PC and other OS's. Only other option to have 8 GB total is to replace DDR2 G.Skill X2 F2-6400CL4-1GBHK with another DDR2 Corsair x2 CM2X2048-6400C4DHX 2GB or can I use another brand?

    Q9550 adds Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d) plus 12 MB L2 Cache vs 4 for E6750

So you have 6GB of memory total?
Do you ever run out of real memory during work?
The F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL (4GBx2) for $43, could be ok if they work. Bit high latency though.

    Yes 6GB of memory total
Yes I have run out of real memory during work in virtual mode. Other time mem usage was high when running some video editing software in 64bit mode.
Is there any other DDR3 memory 4GBx2 with a lower latency that might work? Others can reply if they have any advice. Maybe I will wait on the memory and just install the Q9550 with the currently installed memory for now and further research this.

Well once I get the Fan/heatsink and the Arctic silver 5 will have my friend do the install.

One other question could I have a problem booting into windows 7 ultimate after setting the bios to optimized settings when rebooting prior to booting OS?

I don't think replacing CPU will require anything from windows 7.
There is memory with lower latency (DDR3-1333CL7) but it's only been tested with Z68/P67 chipsets.

    Pros:
Plugged them in and boot up right away on an old Gigabyte P35-DS3R. Runs stable, no issues so far.Cons: None really.
Other Thoughts: Wasn't in the compatibility list for the board but it works just fine. I'm probably not using the full potential of this RAM in terms of speed but now I have double the RAM and no more worries about running out of memory when I have multiple apps running.

The one I mentioned before was N82E16820231308

Does the tRAS Timing difference 21 vs 18 make any difference? Should I go for the DDR3 1066 as it is cheaper?
If the 2x4GB worked good then I could sell the the more expensive ram on eBay to pay for DDR3.

It's up to you of course. DDR-1333 CL 7 is better than DDR-1066 CL 7, but memory performance are not so critical.

EDIT: once you have everything assambled we can assist you to OC 3.2-3.4FGz, this should be easy.

Chike,Thank you for your help and quick replies (my 5th post)

I will wait until the Q9550 is installed and after some safe overclocking after reading that sticky before getting the DDR3 memory.

In the mean time if anyone reads this post and has more info or experienced with using 2x4GB DDR3 with this board please reply.

Unless I need to reply sooner will wait until Q9550 (probably about a week) is installed to give an update.
