Default Which Board ?? Your Thoughts ....

    Hi All,

I am about to put together a new system as mine is getting a little behind with the times, i am a large gigabyte fanboy so of course the mobo make will be obvious just my only problem is which one to bloody use :S read so many reviews and really cant make my mind up so a little help would be gratefully received :) i love the look of the new g1 sniper2 but am wondering if i really need to spend that much on a board when i could be equally as happy with something cheaper.

I would like a board that:

    Z68
x2 PCIE slots supporting crossfire (8x8 not 16x4)
on board graphics for graphics switching
not too fussed with either creative or realtek AUDIO

Rest of setup will be :

    x2 XFX 6970's
    EZCool 1050w PSU
    i7 2600K

Whats your thoughts please chaps ....

I think that you'll have to wait for Ivy Bridge processors to be able to use a K-cpu AND be able to use on-board graphics along with your discrete graphics cards. Ivy Bridge is currently scheduled for March 2012. You might want to wait for a "real" gen3 mobo, not one that is only gen3 "compatible". Right now, I think that the Sniper mobo is the only real gen3 Gigabyte board, but they will probably have additional gen3 boards in the near future.
The 2700K cpu is available now and it might replace the 2600K.

    Nick05,

Whilst I do not have the expertise of profJim I have the following config
    GA-Z68XP-UD3 MB
    i7 2600K - not currently overclocked
    8GB G.Skill Ripsaw DDR3 - not currently overclocked
    Intel RAID Controller with
    60GB Runcore mSATA-600 Caching
    RAID0 - 2 x 500GB Seagate 7200 32MB
    RAID5 - 3 x 1TB Samsung F3 Spinpoints
    Marvell RAID Controller SATA-600
    RAID1 - 2 x Hitachi 1TB 5400 32MB
    1 x Si3144 PCI<->SATA-300 4 way connector with 1 x LG DVDRW
    2 x ATi RADEON HD5750 Crossfire
    1 x Sony 4GB USB on USB3.0 as Readyboot
1 x FREECOM DVB USB TV
    1 x USB Turntable

I am in the middle of testing the various permutations, my next variation will be:
Remove 2xHDD RAID0 and replace RAID0 on 1x HDD and cash that with the Runcore SSD in its housing as a seperate SATA-600 SSD (currently the mSATA is only a 300 so whilst it makes everything blindingly fast I believe I might have a faster PC this way)

I am not a big gamer but I use CAD software, mostly for viewing rather than creating drawings, however; I generally have around 12 applications on the go at any one time and even with the SSD caching on a SATA-300 it is pretty much instantaneous

I have yet to check out the Graphics switching, am waiting for my upgraded power supply before I go down that route

I don't know if that is any help

I'm pretty sure that a Z68 motherboard is an either/or situation when it comes to integrated graphics (IGP) with a non K-cpu or overclocking with a K-cpu.
Z68 with an Ivy Bridge cpu should let you use both at the same time with a K-cpu. I think that Ivy Bridge uses the newest Intel 3000 integrated graphics while Sandy Bridge processors use the current 2000 IGP. Ivy Bridge performance should be somewhat better than Sandy Bridge.

A web search using: sandy bridge vs ivy bridge should detail the differences in performance and features.

Correction: The following Sandy Bridge processors currently have the on-chip Intel HD Graphics 3000:
    i7-2700K
    i7-2600K
    i5-2500k
    i5-2405S
    i3-2125
    i3-2105
edit: Check the motherboard user manual for any Z68 motherboard that you're thinking of buying to verify the on-board options with Sandy Bridge processors.
