Default EP35-DS3: 2x2GB vs 4x1GB. How will OC be impacted?

    Hi there.

I'm thinking about reviving a GA-EP35-DS3 but am missing RAM. When I first bought it, with a Dual-Core E2180 and 2x2GB memory kit (which I'm still using), I was able to push the little E2180 to 3GHz in a matter of seconds, without touching VCore (actually I think I slightly under-volted it). But that was using only one dual-channel lane. With all memory slots populated, how would the chipset cope?

The reason I'm asking is because I have a choice of buying a brand new 2x2GB kit, OR 4x1GB used, for 45% less, both from Team Elite, coincidentally.

On one hand I'd like to spend as little as possible on what is, effectively, a dead platform (point: 4x1GB). On the other hand, I must have the CPU clocking at least 3GHz, which I know it easily does with 2 DIMMs (point: 2x2GB), but wonder whether the chipset would be up to the task with 4 DIMMs.

    Your advise please. Thank you.

2x2GB are preffered. Why do you need another 2x2GB when you already have one?

Sure it is preferred, but let me ask you this way: With the all four memory slots filled, will the P35 chipset be able to handle the 50% FSB increase from 200MHz (quad-pumped) to 300MHz?

I know the CPU can. Before I boxed the lot I had set it to run 1:1 with the RAM, at 400MHz. That's double what the 65nm Dual-Core was intended for. Then I had the multiplier at 7.5. Now, if I went with 4x1GB option (in reality 2x[2x1GB]), I would leave it at 10 and run 4:3.

About what happened to the 2x2GB I keep referring, they're happily living in a EP45-DS3R together with a Q9450@3GHZ-1.1V. When I said the "DDR2 platform is dead" I wasn't being entirely honest. It is still a tremendously competent work-horse. Don't plan on trading for a good couple of years, minimum.

    Cheers.

In his signature profJim has a similar board with 4x2GB memory configuration and 437 MHz FSB so apparantly is is possible, wether it will work with your hardware and the memory the only way to tell is to try.

    I originally overclocked an E2140 to 3.20GHz with 3GB of Ballistic PC2-6400 (2.2) volts (2x1GB + 2x 512MB) in my P35-DS3L.
For 24/7 I dumbed down my system to 3.0GHz.
My signature shows my current 8GB HyperX setup.
My 2x2GB Mushkin 996599 memory also worked great in my P35 system.

As Chike said, the only way to know for sure that a particular brand/model will work is to try it.
    Long live the P35
