Default P55A-UD3R and 16GB RAM - typical Vtt for 4 DIMM stock speed configuration?

    Hi all

On my Gigabyte P55A-UD3R (powered by i7-870), I have all four DIMMs populated with 4GB each. Total detected is fine, 16GB. No issues posting at 1333MHz (it is 1600MHz 1.5V RAM but at 16GB, I'd prefer to just run it at 1333MHz for stability's sake).

The DRAM voltage is set manually at 1.56V and I ran memtest for an intial 24 hours just to check all was well. I then used HCI memtest Linux x64 version and after more than 48 hours it threw up an error. After some searching, it seems when using a Lynnfield processor and all four DIMMs on a board, the Vtt/QPI/IMC voltage usually needs to be kicked up a notch. I checked and this setting was on Auto and next to it appears the stock level of 1.1V, but there's no reading of the current voltage as far as i can see.

How much would one typically need to bump this value on a 4 DIMM stock configuration? Or do I just play the one bump at a time game and retest until no errors?

Anyone else with a 4 DIMM Lynnfield configuration want to share their experience in this thread?

You can look in easytune/advanced/voltage 1 to see voltages, try setting to 1.2v for qpi/vtt as its a different system with a chip on the mb aswell as CPU to handle qpi on p55

I used the BIOS, but I have options Auto, 1.10, 1.17, 1.19, 1.21 and more (in pink/purple). I shall try 1.19 and if that's no go, cautiously 1.21?

1.21v will be fine, don't be scared to use more, you will need it with 16gb

    Cheers wazza!

Another side question if you have time... I just spotted that this Corsair RAM has XMP. Under advanced memory settings in the BIOS, if under XMP enable it has Profile1... "Profile DDR voltage 1.5V" and "Profile QPI voltage 1.1V". When enabled, on the same page, the "Profile DDR voltage" remains 1.5V, "Profile QPI voltage" bumps to 1.2V. If I then save changes, boot up, its now running at 1600MHz 9-9-9-24, the RAM voltage reading 1.53V now, but I there's no way to see if the Vtt/QPI was increased.

Question is, with XMP enabled, does the BIOS increase the VTT/QPI to 1.2V by itself, or are those "profile DDR1 and QPI" voltages guides as to what you should set it manually to?

You can see what is actually set in EasyTune -> Tuner -> Advanced -> Voltage tab. Target is the actual value used.

You may not need that much if you were nearly stable with default(unless you were using XMP and it set it 1.21v).
More is not always better. e.g. my memory is rated 1066 @ 2.0-2.1v, it's EPP profile sets it to 2.1v, and it can be clocked up to 1080 with spec timings. However testing proved that 2.0v enables it to run at 1140+.

It's up to you, either use xmp where it sets everything for you,or manually set ram/voltages

Yeah, i suspect that might be the case. the error happened at defaults (so what i believe is 1.1V Vtt/QPI) and I suspect it was 'nearly' stable anyhow.

Cheers. I'll perhaps follow the "only change one variable then re-test" and let the current testing run its course, as all i've done is bumped the VTT/QPI manually to 1.19V. This XMP, whilst looks appealing for the n00bs among us (me :D), does run everything at 1600MHz which i guess places even more stress on the IMC, which probably defeats the purpose of running a stable 16GB setup.

    Thanks for your help guys!

update: well it failed at 1.19V (@ 1333MHz) and oddly it failed in less time. :S - so much for i thought it was nearly stable on stock 1.10V!
i checked EasyTune and under XMP it sets it the target to 1.21V, so i've set it manually to 1.21. Re-testing.
update: so far, 48 hours and testing okay at 1.21 Vtt /1600MHz. that said, the first 16GB test at 1.10V was around the stage and showed no issues until around now (though it was at 1333MHz). It's interesting what a load difference 4 DIMMs places on the memory controller. I've used 2x 4GB DIMMs before at 1600MHz and it was happy at 1.1V Vtt/QPI and 1.50V Vddr.
update: now at 172 hours without error, so it appears 1.21 vtt is required.
