Best I can do. Visual inspection of the socket shows no bent/misaligned pins, however visual inspection of the pads (Underside of cpu chip) shows that some of the pins are only JUST touching the pads... possibly in some cases hitting 2 pads at once.

i cant really tell from that pic if any are out of shape or not,the cpu shouldnt move around though, thats what the two notches on the sides are for,if any arnt touching or touching two pads can only mean some pins are very slightly bent or out of shape? tried cleaining the contacts of the cpu with alcahol?

okay, alcohol wipe gave me enough time to upgrade bios... boot-loop on restart about 8-12 times, now in Win7, core temp shows cpu temps max 98-100 deg Cthe x58 (Northbridge?) is so hot you can only touch briefly.

if this runs true to form, the system should hard-crash in about 40mins

I used to be avionics tech, so can confirm no bent pins in socket, as stated before the 'indents' on the cpu pads (where the contacts are contacting (sic) show some contacts are barely touching

the high temps of course are an issue, as funds allow will upgrade from the Intel cooler to a coolermaster V8.

well i bet its pretty warm in nz right now? could be your problem as cpu will auto shut down to protect itself when 100c is reached, did you look at how much cpu voltage is being used by auto in the bios? try loading optimized defaults in the bios, and check intel heatsink is clicked down properly as they are very easy to miss install, even with crappy intel fan temps should be around 40-55c max when not under any load

heres with my fan/heatsink,intel fan/heatsink adds on average 10-15c compared with good aftermarket cooler

coretemp and reatemp readings,my cpu voltage is 1.225v with power saving enabled its 0.928v on this chip

Are you sure the CPU heatsink is seated properly (e.g. not bent and touch the whole CPU suface), and it's fan working?
Do you use any thermal paste at all?

    Chike... Yes, Yes and Yes

The PC ran for 5hrs today (mobo sitting on desk, isolated from shorting) then on a reboot and entry to bios to grab voltage's instant boot-loop.
cleared cmos, still looping. removed cmos battery, removed power plug... waited 15 mins, 5 boot loops then load into OS (hence I am able to post here) temps have dropped to 36-59 deg C. new paste (again) properly seated cooler.

    Voltages from "Fail-safe" Bios settings:
    Vcore 1.26875-1.27500
    qpi/vtt 1.175
    pll 1.800Dram 1.500 (1.65v written on ram-sticks)
    Profile ddr voltage 1.5
    profile qpi 1.75
    cpu clock drive 800mv
    PCiE 900mv

I hope I got them all, cos if I have to reboot its prob gonna take 2 hrs to get back to the OS :(

(1.65v written on ram-sticks) set dram to 1.66v in bios,
(qpi/vtt 1.175v) set to atleast 1.25-1.3v in bios

other voltages look ok,temps look better now too
