its not because its 2tb,its just probably that model not being properly supported by the bios or windows? not sure, never had any problems with samsung (cant say for wd)drives being detected but i have different mb,try ahci it will be better anyway as it enables extra features for your hdd, things like native command queuing

Ok, will do. Is it a risky operation, as in would I need to back up everything first on my current drives?

Also, right now I have a 500gb sata drive as my boot drive, and a 1TB "green" drive for storage. My idea is to use the 1TB "green" drive to boot and use the new 2TB "green" drive as storage, which will give me 3 total TB instead of 1.5TB. Or, will the 1TB green drive be too slow to boot from and play games from? Its 7200rpm, but I think the green feature makes it spin up and down depending on need, so does that make it not a good candidate for a boot and games drive?

i dont know, you can always try it and see how it goes,if you dont like the performance just clone your 1tb drive to your 2tb drive and run that as the boot hdd, acronis true image or any freeware hdd cloning software would do the trick,as for the reg tweak its safe,it wont lose you any data and is reversible, ive done it and it works perfect

the drive i have only has 5600rpm and runs great as os drive

download and run atto for benchmark figures, heres what im getting on 2tb drive which is half full,in ahci mode in bios

I followed your instructions and installed the chipset inf file. My drive was detected on boot so I finished the partitions and formatted. When I tried to copy to it however, it errored out. and the drive disappeared again. So I put it in an enclosure and connected it via usb, only to have it error out when copying to it. I coped the same files to my other partitions on that same drive without a problem. So I used the WD utility to check the drive and it errored out about 1 min into it saying Too Many Bad Sectors. This was probably the issue all along, and pretty crappy for a brand new drive. Now I need to contact WD to see about a replacement, anyone dealt with them before? Ive used WD drives for years and never had a prob till now.

I also loaded the ACHI drivers and my 2 good sata drives work with it now. My question is, is ACHI better/faster/more reliable than running it in standard sata mode?

Before you rma the drive, it might be worthwhile to use the WD software to perform a low level format on the entire drive. I prefer to do this from a bootable optical, floppy, or usb drive with all my other drives temporarily disconnected so that I don't accidentally format the wrong drive and loose all the data on a working drive!! This approach might take a long time, an overnight low level format might be best.

AHCI is best with an ssd, I don't know if it makes a difference with hard drives. For hot swap capability, I think that AHCI is required. WD tech support can give a definitive answer. On my older P35 system with an ssd boot drive and using AHCI, hard drive performance was about 15 - 20% better on all my WD (4K aligned) hard drives.

I've had no problems with my ssd/hard drive AHCI setup so far, after one year.
Even the best quality hardware sometimes needs an rma. PITA? Yup.

Will a low level format fix the bad sectors? or just mark them as bad so they arent used?

I tried burning the WD software to a bootable cd, it booted up just found, detected all 3 of my WD drives, but when I tried to test the 2TB one, it said something like it wasnt supported. I dont understand that because I double checked it and I downloaded the correct one and it clearly has WD20EARS on the list.

I was able to run the windows version of the software from windows, which is how I came to the Too Many Bad Sectors conclusion. Still safe/effective to do it that way?

If running in ACHI mode doenst give me any real advantage I will probably just leave it off, seems to boot faster without it. What does the Native Mode option do? any advantages?

native mode is just for installing older os,like win2k ect, newer os's dont need it,i find it boots quicker with ahci enabled, you wont see any real world difference between ahci or ide but you would if you were using an ssd so its good to have it enabled for future upgrades, you can switch to ide or ahci whenever you want so its up to you

and yh it seemslike youve just picked up a faulty drive

From page 37 in your motherboard user manual:
SATA AHCI Mode (Intel ICH9 Southbridge)
Enables or disables AHCI for the SATA controllers integrated in the Intel ICH9 Southbridge.
Disabled Configures the SATA controllers to PATA mode. (Default)
    AHCI (Note)
Configures the SATA controllers to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller Interface
(AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to enable
advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and hot plug
    .
For more information about AHCI, please visit Intel's website.

SATA Port0-3 Native Mode (Intel ICH9 Southbridge)
Specifies the operating mode of the integrated SATA controllers.
    Disabled
Allows the SATA controllers to operate in Legacy IDE mode.
In Legacy mode the SATA controllers use dedicated IRQs that cannot be shared
with other device. Set this option to Disabled if you wish to install operating
systems that do not support Native mode, e.g. Windows 9X/ME. (Default)
    Enabled
Allows the SATA controllers to operate in Native IDE mode.
Enable Native IDE mode if you wish to install operating systems that support
    Native mode, e.g. Windows XP/2000.
I wonder if I'll be banned for contradicting a forum moderator?
