Question 2TB not detected on Gigabyte P35-S3G - Help!

I just got a new WD 2 Tb hard drive (sata), but after connecting it and rebooting, the computer doesnt recognize it. The first time windows 7 popped up a message saying drivers had been installed for new device, then it took several minutes for the hard drive to show up in Disk Management. Once it did, I partitioned twice and began formatting the first partition. After a few minutes, it simply stopped formatting and the drive disappeared from Disk Management. I have not been able to get Windows to recognize the drive exists since then. The drive does spin up, and to test it I put it in an enclosure and connected it via USB. The drive detects and formats just fine that way. So that leads me to beleive its a motherboard issue. Ive never had issues like this with hard drives. I usually just plug em in and they detect, I partition and format - done. The Bios date is 3-25-08. Can anyone help?

    thanks!

Does the drive still get detected by the bios while connected via sata?

If the drive is not detected by the bios it will not be detected by windows.

Try using a different sata port.

Yes, the bios detects it on boot, and I have tried it on differnt sata ports and even bought a new sata cable and tried it - no dice. Because it spins up and works externally while in an enclosure, Im thinknig there must be something I have to set up or do for this drive to work? Is there something different that needs to be done for a 2TB drive? I beleive it is a green drive as well.

My Samsung HD204UI 2TB HDD works perfectly with my 2007 P35-DS3L motherboard. This drive was originally mounted internally for initial formatting and 4K partition alignment. Once everything was set, I mounted the drive in a Rosewill external enclosure and the drive has no problems when it's connected using an e-sata cable. I did not try using the much slower external usb connection.
I'm using the latest F9 bios for my motherboard.

Which motherboard bios version are you using?
Please provide a link to specifications for your external drive enclosure.

Thats the problem, it doesnt show up in windows at all now. Ive tried it on all sata ports. It spins up, bios detects it, but windows doesnt detect it. Thats whats so frustrating! The only way I have gotten it to work is putting it in an enclosure and connecting it USB. Then it detects and formats. Havent tried to copy anything to it yet, because I dont want to use it in an external, I want to use it as an internal drive.

That's what I mean, once it shows up when plugged in usb, rename the drive letter, save it then unplug and install it on the SATA port,it might show up then,or try setting native sata port 0-3 to enabled or disabled and see if it shows up

Try installing latest Intel rapid storage drivers and/or latest Intel inf chipset drivers too

I will try that. I know how to change the drive letter, but how do I "save" it before turning off my computer so I can attach the drive to a sata port?

I went into the bios last night and enabled AHCI and rebooted. All 3 sata drives were detected by AHCI, but when it tried to load windows (7), I saw a flash of blue screen and the computer rebooted. I let it go for a few mins and it just repeats that sequence, never loading windows and continuously rebooting.

I will try the native sata mode, what does it do?

Ive never had this much trouble installing a hard drive!

you need to do a reg tweak to enable ahci,if you installed os before switching to ahci mode it will blue screen, follow this guide to enable it then restart pc select ahci mode and it will install the needed drivers for you,you might have more luck running in ahci mode

I will try this when I get home. Im just kinda curious of why its so much trouble to get this thing to work. Is it because of its 2TB size? I dont think its because its a green drive, one of my other connected sata drives is a green drive and it works fine.
