Default GA-EX58-UD4P Looking to add a SSD

Hello all, this will be my first SSD and I need help to choosing the right one. These are my system specs

    GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P F13
    South Bridge:
    1. 6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATA2_0, SATA2_1, SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA2_5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
    2. Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10
    OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 8-8-8-24 @ 1536 Mhz 1.64V
    Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB
    CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
    Windows 7 64bit

What should I look for when buying a SSD for my system? Whats compatible with my system? (Sata II/III?) Which brand/brand series is reliable and fast.

OCZ Technology, Kingston Technology Corp., Intel, Corsair?

I have been looking at the OCZ drives my self. With your board it does not have native sata3 ports. So you would see better performance with the drive on the sata2 ports when using the drive as a boot drive.

you can still go for sata3 ssd'd though, they will be backward compatible with sata2 and therfore be futurproof if you decide to upgrade your mb to sata3 spec, there are issues with synchronous nand and non synchronous nand, profjim knows more, one type loses performance if the drives half full and the other type of nand doesnt,i dont know which is which though off hand

i know the vertex3 and corsair gt doesnt have this issue, the ocz agility does though

Thanks, I just placed a order for a 120 GB Vertex 3. Now I need to know what I need to do when installing the new drive. Like AHCI, disabling disk index, superfetch(registry & services), and disk defragmenter.

You'll find most of the information you need using the OCZ ssd forum:

There are some excellent suggestions in http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...-capacity.html

Wow I learned so much it didn't know!

So now the only question I have is should I update my bios before I put a fresh win 7 install on the SSD? I'm currently using GA-EX58-UD4P F13.

It's best to flash your bios with stable, non-overclocked bios settings using QFlash.
You might need to tweak some bios settings with a newer (or older) bios version.
My preference would be to install the new ssd, install win7 on the ssd and to wait about one week before flashing your bios. This will simplify trouble-shooting if some issues come up.

Let us know how your upgrade works out.

The installation was smooth and easy. I also installed a Corsair H60 but had to return it because of a noisy pump. After I took the H60 out and put everything back together, I could not see any hard drives in the bios! I could pick the boot sequence tho. I just left it alone.

I want to format my old hard drive now. Should I delete the partitions from the windows setup disk or from in windows Disk Management?

I did a benchmark with AS SSD Benchmark. I'm not sure if its the best speeds I could be getting with Sata 3 Gb/s.

it looks about right for sata2 speeds, most important are the 4k and 4k-64thrd read/writes,if your old hdd is backed up then i would formatt it completely inc any partitions that arnt needed and use it purely for storage ect for your ssd,i find atto disk benchmark to be the best program for ssd's
