Default GA-X58-UD5 gets to POST code FF, but no video and no boot

I have a GA-X58-UD5 mainboard with an i7-920 and 3x 2GB of Patriot G Series RAM that has been turned off for a couple of years. (Don't ask.) I had pulled the graphics card for another build, so I installed a brand new MSI N460GTX Cyclone 768D5/OC. The system booted into Windows 7 x64, and ran for about 15 minutes before the monitor went blank. I could see that Windows was still running from the disk activity light.

In subsequent attempts to boot, the BIOS runs through to code FF. There is usually a pause of several seconds at code 8B. There are no beeps, but I'm not sure if there would be with the POST readout on this board.

I have probably tried 12 or more different combinations of disconnecting SATA drives, removing memory, etc. I cleared the CMOS settings early on, but I actually removed the battery for 10 minutes and replaced it during one of the recent attempts. The BIOS always gets to FF. I've tried various RAM configurations. I have replaced the graphics card with a known good 8800GTX, and still no change. I've also tried a different monitor.

Currently, the system is configured as follows:

    1x 2GB GSeries RAM (1600)
    ASUS 8800GTX
    no SATA drives connected
    Seasonic SS-600HM power supply
using an old PS2 keyboard for testing

I've built a lot of systems, and I've fixed lots of problems, but I've run out of ideas. Can anyone make a suggestion?

FF is Boot attempt (INT 19h). The bios past post and passed the operations to the hdd. I would suggest trying another monitor and/or gpu. Sounds like possibly the backlight in the monitor might have gone bad or the new gpu went bad.

Also you will not hear any beeps unless you have a case speaker connected to the motherboards Front panel speaker connector.
