    Default Adding RAM and Voltage Help

    Hello,
    I have an old computer that I built a while ago (~4 years ago). It was the first, and only time I built my own computer. I had many problems with it, but managed to fix most of them. It's kinda a long story so I'm skipping to the latest problem.

    Currently I have one (2 Gig) stick of RAM installed and want to connect my second. But I read that the voltages need to be changed for 4+ gigs of RAM otherwise the computer will not boot (I had the continuous on, off problem). Please take a look at my system information and help me as I'm not sure of what should be change in the BIOS.

    Im lazy,
    but since you ask about ram volts, I wouldnt go any higher than the 2.128v you have indicated for ddr2, not for 24/7 use anyway.
    doesnt the bios indicate pink/red at that voltage?
    Take out the "turbo" memory and go for normal if the second stick isnt working.


    Im sure there will be more 775 users posting but with a q9300 , you should be able to boost up the fsb/cpu speed to give more performance and keep the memory at a lower voltage, even if you have to lower the timings a bit.
    Raising the fsb should compensate for dropping memory timings.

    Whats the total amount of ram you are tring to run 4gb ore more? How many sets of ram do you have. (1 set can include 2 modules if they were in the same package)

    Is the second memory module you are tring to install is the same as the installed one?
    If the answer is yes, try setting MCH OverVoltage to +1.25.

    Another thing that may work is changing SMM(System Memory Multiplier) to 2.40B.

    Please attach a CPU-Z text report(CPU-Z -> About tab -> Save Report (.TXT)) to your next post(you need to "Ggo Advanced")

    Thanks for all the responses.


    The BIOS was set to fail-safe defaults because of the past boot issues I had. There were no pink or red indicators at any of the voltages. I cannot change the DDR18V setting of 2.128V. I it's just a measured reading.


    I don't know if I should overclock my CPU with the current fan and heat sink I have on it (Intel LGA 775 CPU Stock Cooler E21984-001). I never overclocked before and have no clue on what parameters to change and what to look for so nothing goes wrong.


    For now, I'm trying to run 4 GB of RAM, only one set. Both memory sticks are the same OCZ reapers. After testing, both sticks work on their own. When changing the System Memory Multiplier to 2.40B, it gave a red blinking message: 'System Voltage Not Optimized.' So I put it back to 'Auto.' Then I changed the Performance Enhance from 'Turbo' to 'Normal.' (It said that It should be set to 'Normal' if overclocking for more stability) Then I changed the (G)MCH OverVoltage to '0.125' (Max was '0.775'). I inserted the second stick and the system seems to be working for now. How do I know if the system is stable for sure, other than the obvious 'it's on and working'?

    Please load optimized defaults, Fail Safe is going to make things not work smoothly! Load optimized, then save/apply/reboot BACK to the BIOS, once in the BIOS set your memory voltage and everything else you want to set, and then be sure to set your SATA settings back to what you need RAID/AHCI. Then save/apply/reboot to windows, then shut down and put in your other stick of memory, use slots 1+3 from the CPU.

    Performance enhance you want on standard, here, these settings should get you going easy! Do the above with one stick installed, then set these settings with one stick installed and boot to windows then shut down and put in the other stick

    First try to lower MCH OverVoltage maybe you can get way with less.
    All seems o work normally. Why worry about SMM 2.40B(DDR-800) when it works at DDR-1066.
    Please run MemSet and see what Performance Level is set to, a value of 6 or 5(lower is better) should be possible. The parameter in BIOS is Static tRead Value(tRD).

    A few hours of Prime95 blend torture will be good to test stability.
    Watch that core temps do not exceeed 70c, with Core Temp or RealTemp.

    I tried doing what Lsdmeasap said to do in the BIOS. When setting the System Memory Multiplier to either 2.40B or 3.20B, I received a red warning message like before. I proceeded anyways and the computer did not boot. I got stuck at the Verifying DMI Pool Data (Sometimes saying it was a success). I had this problem before and unplugged my hard drives and reconnected only my main one. Then setting the values to the following resulted in a successful boot:

    Performance enhance……………………………[Standard] (Strange that I could only take off bold only in source mode)
    System Memory Multiplier (SPD)............[Auto]
    DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD) .............[Auto]

    System Voltage Control ...................... [Manual] <-- cannot set any numerical values for this parameter; so I left it alone when testing (or maybe you were showing me what the total voltage would be when changing the MCH OverVoltage)
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control.................[Normal]

    The MetSet program identified the memory sticks to be OCZ PC2-6400 (400Mhz). The sticker with the model and product model is not what the RAM really is! This is probably why some suggestions did not work. They were running around 533 MHz according to the MetSet program. The fsb/dram is at 5.8.

    MetSet Timings:

    I'm sorry man!!

    This is what you should have set that voltage on, the DDR2 votlage!

    System Voltage Control ...................... [Manual] This is just enabled or disable, sorry!
    DDR2 OverVoltage Control.....................[Normal] << Set +0.3 = 2.1V This is where I meant that to go! Sorry!
    PCI-E OverVoltage Control......................[Normal]
    FSB Overvoltage Control.........................[Normal]
    (G)MCH OverVoltage Control.................[Normal] << Set +0.2-0.3 Needed for 4GB or more

    Allmost all DDR2 memory is 6400 or less by default, and the user has to manually set it to 8500, so it is not labeled incorrectly, that's just how memory is labeled. So memset is not wrong and you didn't get the wrong memory!

    So ya, without setting the memory voltage (DDR2 Overvoltage) to +0.3V=2.1v and increasing the MCH OverVoltage to +02.-0.3 you aren't going to get anywhere. So please accept my apology for getting that +0.3 in the wrong spot there!! Go back and try all my suggestion again
