Default OCZ vertex 3 on a Gigabyte ga-p55a-ud4p, best configuration help needed.

Just bought a vertex 3 for my ga-p55a-ud4p. Since this ssd advertises it will do 6Gbps, and the ga-p55a-ud4p has two sata 3, 6Gbps connections onboard (marvel 9128)..........I figured it was a smart move to speed up my computer..........til i got home, installed the drive......ugh......the drive works on the sat 3 ports, but, less than half the advertised speed.......seems about the same on the sat 2 ports. Have i wasted my money here, the drive cost me 159 bucks.

Also, any help on how to configure this drive for the best possible performance would be greatly appreciated......thanks

thats the best speeds your gonna see im afraid, its the early marvell controller, they updated with the later 9182 controller that has full speeds, you might be better off using intel sata2 ports,or try and get hold of a pci/pci-e controller card with the newer marvel controller chip

Check out post #1 in http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...tml#post380369 for a link to the OCZ ssd forum for the information you'll need for an optimal setup.

Your best performance using the Marvell 6Gb/s port might be when you use the win7 drivers instead of using Marvell drivers.
Check the OCZ forums for any information that deals with ssd instability when connected to a Marvell port.

Your ssd will perform at the rated speed when you eventually upgrade your motherboard with a newer model that has native Intel 6Gb/s ports. As far as I know, most if not all aftermarket sata3 I/O controllers use a Marvell chip that probably won't give significantly higher performance. If you decide to buy an I/O controller, make sure that it will allow your system to boot from an ssd connected to the controller.

If these options apply to your motherboard, one of the options might help somewhat when using the Marvell sata3 port.

In post #1, the OP asked:
Can someone please explain the following BIOS options to me:

    ESATA3/GSATA3 Transaction Mode
    - Bypass
    - FWMode
    - Auto

    SATA Firmware Selection
    - Onchip
    - Auto
    - Force

+1 yes you might see better figures if you use standard microsoft drivers and not the marvell ones, but the second chip (9182)is the improved one

Thanks, win7 seems to be equally stable running the ssd off either sata2 or the marvel sata3, but, runs a tad faster on my sata2 (w/achi), my cd room on the sata3 port. atto bench = read 283mb/s, write 236mb/s. When I put the ssd on .the marvel port, the read speed is 283, the same.......but the writes drop to 170

AS SSD results are a bit more difficult for me to understand, but, the "Totals" for that test are.......on sata3 = 132 , on sata2=239 (whatever that means, not sure)

Also with the vertex3 on sata2, malwarebytes scans the drive in 7mins, 4sec..........while on sata3, in 7mins, 37secs.

So , until i can find a better, affordable solution, either hardware, settings, drivers....i'll stick with the ssd on sata2, ugh.

You could buy a pci-e add in sata3 card but you need to makesure it has the newer Marvell controller,I don't think there are any Intel sata3 add in cards

Thanks so much........I'll save my money for a new mb, cpu and ram for my next "present to myself" . In the meantime, i will check those forums as I'd like to make sure my bios and windows settings are correct for the best possible performance of what i have now. thanks again !
