Ok download the latest driver (you prob already have) Go to device manager and uninstall the current driver. Reboot...Let windows install it's driver then install the new ATi driver.

It's the 12.2 I'm trying to install. I tried both the ATI uninstall utility & the driversweeper 3.2.0, and it looked like a pretty good cleanup.
I'll revisit this in the morning, can't put the pc out of commission right now.

Uninstalled again using the ATI utility. Rebooted into safe mode. Windows is using the generic VGA driver. Used driversweeper to wipe all the ATI stuff. Tried to install driver, no good. Went into device manager and directed it to the newly created AMD folder and the INF folder. Install failed again.
Guess when I have time I'll restore a system image I made with Macrium soon after a clean install.
    What a PITA.

Thanks for the help, folks, but at least most of the Windows updates are in the backup image so it won't be too painful I guess.

Did you try leaving 12.1 installed and installing 12.2 right over it? I always do that unless I have issues or if I'm doing a review

If you look through the logs and find exactly what file is missing I'm sure we can give it to you and tell you where it goes.

Did you try the fix posted here in the last thread? Might be worth a shot before going backwards on your windows install
    CCC 11.5 installation failure(Solution is in this thread) [SOLVED] - Graphics-Cards - Graphic-Displays

Also make sure you have all .NET framework updates installed, and all their respective updates as well, all offered in windows optional updates.

I always install ATI on top of each other with no problems in the past. My pc always stays updated-I have several programs that use .NET.
Anyway, I had to do a fresh Windows install-my backup apparently had the same problem.

Ya, that's how I do it too, unless I have an issue or need a clean install for testing or review purposes.

Sorry to hear you couldn't get this resolved without a clean install! But you're back up and running now right?

After hours and hours everything is right as rain. Mystery to me why I've done all these monthly driver updates with no problems until now.
THIS TIME I made a system image after the OS install with just a few basic programs installed, then made another one after more programs were installed, so I should be better prepared this time. I really like this Macrium Reflect free program for simple image backups and it saved me a headache a few times on my HTPC here recently.
