    Hello profjim,

I can confirm that problem is caused when I usе DDR3.

I tested again and again with DDR2 and shutdown was normal.

Then switched to DDR3 (different set - Kingston HyperX 2x4GB 1600 - @SPD speeds) - and problem appears again.

So I think that problem is with DDR3 slots or some incompatibility with so big modules (4GB). Maybe 2x2GB DDR3 will be fine. But I don't have to test for the moment.

Decision is yet to come back to ddr2 , because no chance so far to use my 2x4 GB DDR3 modules without troubles.Only I can not explain how there was no problem first few weeks since I switched to DDR3.

    Bummer
Try testing with only one DDR3 module in one slot at a time, possibly 4 different single module tests.
If there are still problems, can you test with a 2 x 2GB set of DDR3 memory?
Did you try under-clocking the second set of DDR3 memory?
Check the GB memory QVL list for your motherboard. Sometimes it will list some restrictions about memory types, such as single vs. double sided modules.

It's possible that 2x4GB of DDR3 memory put too much strain on your motherboard and that the problem with not shutting down properly coincidentally happened at the same time as you connected your hard drive to the e-sata bracket.

I think that I found the problem, from the Gigabyte web page for your P35C-DS3R (rev 2.0) specifications:

    Memory Support
    DDR3:

    1. 2 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 4 GB of system memory
    2. Dual channel memory architecture
    3. Support for DDR3 1333*/1066/800 MHz memory modules

    DDR2:

    1. 4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory
    2. Dual channel memory architecture
    3. Support for DDR2 1066*/800/667 MHz memory modules

    * Please refer "Memory Support List" for memory support information.

note: this information is also found in page 10 of your motherboard user manual.

Yes you are right. There is some evidence on the internet that this MB is working with 8GB DDR3 , but maybe revision 2.1... I don't know exactly.
I will try to test with 2x2 GB DDR3 and if there is no problem with shutdown we can confirme that 8GB DDR3 is not fully supported on my MB (revision 2.0). And if there is a problem with 2x2 GB DDR3 - maybe there is defective slot or .. just can't work normal with ddr3.

    Will keep you informed

    Thanks for your help!

    You're welcome.
Working with DDR3 memory on the older P35 and P45 can be hit or miss.
Some can handle larger amounts and/or higher speeds and some don't do as well.
Sometimes there are compatibility issues with some memory brands or models.

With the right memory, you might be able to run with 8GB of DDR3 memory, but 4GB memory modules might not have been available when your motherboard was introduced. It's probably safer to only run with 2x2GB of DDR3 due to the age of your board.
It's unlikely that you will see a significant performance boost with DDR3 memory.
Your best performance will be with a moderately overclocked cpu with optimized memory timings, with DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

Looking forward to your next update.

    Hi again,

I found 2x2 GB DDR3 (kingston HyperX) and the problem with shutdown appears again. Memory modules are running @ dual channel @ SPD rock stable (prime95, memtest) there is no issues , but pc again can't shutdown with ddr3 modules. So the problem is with DDR3 no matter of size of the modules (2 or 4 GB). Same situation with 4 and 8GB DDR3.
As I said there was no problem at the first weeks of using DDR3.

    The problem appeared suddenly.

So I switched back to DDR2 and there is no problem. So this is my fix :)))

    Cheers,

Glad to hear that your system is OK with DDR2 memory.
My P35-DS3L runs nicely with my cpu at 3.48GHz and 8GB of HyperX T1 memory @ 874MHz with 4-4-4-10 timings.
Let us know if you want any help with overclocking your system.

    Thanks for the update.

    I appreciated your help,

My system is working now with A-data Vitesta 800+ Extreme Series (2x2) @ 4-4-4-11 ..800Mhz. And my cpu can overclock @ almost 4.5 Ghz (E8500 E0) on air. Latest stable clock for benchmarking was 4.4 Ghz. 4Ghz for every day use is not a problem. ( this was with G.Skill memory)
Now is running @ default 3.16Ghz... Because it's too noisy and I will use this system as secondary so no more overclock for this pc :)

    Thank you profjim!

    Cheers

    You're welcome.

Your pc is going to enjoy an easy-going semi-retirement.
Your E8500 is several steps better than the E6850 that powers my ancient N650SLI-DS4 system.
Maybe I'll luck out some day and find a retired Q9550 to play with.
