Default Op System stops installing at about 34 minutes to finish XP and Vista

    Hi,
I am trying to refurbish a PC with a 8IPE1000 PRO2 mother board.

At between 33 and 35 minutes to finish of the installation it stops working and has to be turned off - with XP Pro and Home; also with Vista it stalls part way through but with Windows Me it fully installs (I think it is because Me does not check for Devices).

I have removed all peripheral devices, exchanged all possible hardware with known working hardware, used genuine Windows CDs, taken the CMOS battery out overnight, redone the BIOS - but not Flashed it as I do not know how.

Gigabyte Support have suggested it needs to be taken to a repair shop, but I would like to get it going if at all possible.

Is there a mother board diagnostic program to find faults?

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Waga

Make sure your BIIOS ver is up to date (go to Gigabyte website to confirm)

    - Thank you Conners and Hyper530, I am having some problems adjusting to the system, hope you can be patient with me. The AWARD BIOS version is F7 - 5/3/2004 (from pressing F9 at start BIOS startup), from Gigabyte site the latest version is F10 - 22/8/2005. I don't know how to update the BIOS; do I use the XPress Install, XPress Recovery or XPress BIOS Rescue? As for clearing the CMOS I have found a 2 pin connector on the board near the AGP8X graphic card slot - but I am not sure if it is the CMOS clearing point or not as there is no writing to confirm it. Would I lose any BIOS version by clearing the CMOS if I find the right connector to jump - (as I understand it I place a HDD jumper on the two pins of the connector then remove it to "clear the CMOS")? A detailed Hardware list is In the profile I think - but I will try to give enough details here: Gigabyte Motherboard Ga-8IPE1000 PRO2 (rev 2 I think), DDR Ram - I have tried various combinations up to 2GB, Intel Processor P4 2.8GHz CPUID OF33 Socket Type 478, ATX 480W Power supply, and as mentioned in last post I have tried exchanging graphic cards, IDE and SATA HDDs, removed all peripheral equipment etc. Hope this info helps for you to assist me, all help is appreciated.

Thank you Conners and Wazza300 for your replies,

Wazza I do not have an onboard graphics connector (as far as I can tell anyway) and I have tried all of your suggestions except that - thanks again. Conners I have now cleared CMOS as described and retried to install, but to no avail. Very hesitant about Flashing/updating BIOS and will read carefully before doing it as many people warn against it for people like me. Will reply when I do it. I also have to check more carefully the correct BIOS update as the Motherboard has Ga-8IPE1000 PRO2 on it and the product page has W after the PRO 2. Regards Waga

[QUOTE=waga;430521]Thank you Conners and Wazza300 for your replies,

Finally I tried and was successful to Flash the BIOS to F10 from F7. But to no avail again - same problem with installation stalling at about 34 minutes.

Also: 1) The PWR_LED is not working on the motherboard; it is connected to the PWR_LED on the motherboard - but in the manual (which is for the earlier model) it is connected in the 10 wire front panel connector.

    2) The 10 wire front panel ribbon colours do not match the manual.

    3) There is not a NB_Fan connected.

    4) I have changed again from the AGP8x slot to a PCI slot and graphic card, when I did this I got a "Checksum Error" message with F1 to continue - this took the installation to 9 minutes to go instead of the usual 34 minutes (this was before the Flashing of the BIOS), but after a restart it was back to 33, 34 or 35 minutes again.

    5) I have been reading about "SetUpapi.log files" (M/Soft kb828267) to detect which device was being installed before stalling - should I try this do you think?

    6) The PC was used for gaming before me and has not worked since, is there any "gaming settings" in BIOS that would not be reset to standard by Clearing CMOS and Flashing the BIOS?

    7) Are there any BIOS settings for SATA that I should check after using the ÷ptimised settings?

If you have any other thoughts I would appreciate it.

    Regards Waga

Might just try letting it set there for a while when it seems like it stalls.
