well it wont help if the thermal pads are in the wrong place,it will cause overheating and crashes, pretty sure they shouldnt be on the resistors, you wanna clean all the dust off and old thermal paste and apply some new and re seat the pads where they should be then test again at stock gpu clocks and in the fastest pci-e slots

right i have now placed all the thermal pads on the chips and re done the thermal paste on both gpu's as i took the second one apart as to see where the thermal pads were on that one and they were on the little black chips (mos-fet's) placed both gpu's back into the 16x slots 1 and 3 and tested again with heaven benchmark, it froze in the first screens like in the demo before i could even run a bench mark, restarted and the same again, i then swaped the cards around and it froze while running a benchmark, i then tested each card on its own and could run heaven plenty of times with no crash and no freezing, i tryed again with both and swaping them around and every time it either freezes or crashes, i tryed both gpu's in the 8x slots 2 and 4 and can run heaven again without freezing or chashing, this is very strange as i havent changed any settings either with the system bios or the gpu settings, both cards tested @ stock clocks, i have managed to get both gpu's running a little cooler useing chill factor 3 thermal paste

Ok,you can try upping ioh and ich core voltages in BIOS,only two or three clicks on each and see if that helps,it usually does with xfire, did it ever crash with downclocking gpu memory a little?

One thing to might check is to see if ULPS is disabled.

ok now i tryed changeing some settings the IOH crose is 1.100v auto so i changed to 1.200v as it is the next setting up, the ICH core is 1.100v auto and iv set that to 1.140 as that was the next one up and still the same the 4th run of heaven benchmark just froze as usual (for this system) both gpu's are on the oler ones bios for the Gigabyte HD 6850 standard card giveing clocks of 775/1005 useing the latest bios for that card witch is the F3-C bios, i tryed with the system overclock right back to 2.8 stock and the same happens and now the system is stable back @ 4.0ghz

i dont know much about the ULPS i did try to turn that off but now i dont know if its on or off, i have 2 screen shots of 2 sepret rebots no stettings were changed at all between boots and theres something there that just isnt right

    the first screen shot

i think this is haw it should look other than the clocks that i think while the system is idle they should be lower on the 2nd gpu and the VDDC IS SLIGHTLY DIFFRENT ON BOTH CARDS

i'll have to post below for second screen shot

    Second screen shot
    Gigabyte x58a-ud3r + 2x Gigabyte HD 6850-untitled-jpg

ok now this seams so weird to me, this was just after the first screen shot with just a normal reboot "no settings changed" now look at the clock on the second gpu while windows idle and have a look at the VDDC on the second gpu, second gpu is the right side always

something there just doesnt seam right to me

idk,it takes a while sometimes for the clocks to enter idle mode, sometimes they stick,if you press default in ccc it usually cures it,this is why i dont bother with xfire too much hassle,i cant think whatelse you can try

thanks wazza m8, i have been reading on the changes i would get by keeping the gpu's in the 8x slots 2 and 4 and apently i wouldnt even notice the diffrence unless i was to use a huge screen res so useing the 2 gpu's in the 8x pci e slots wouldnt really have an impact on me FPS would be the same, if anything maybe 1.000089 % diffrence and its the only way really of keeping both gpu's in crossfire and working on this system, i will continue to fillow this up and try to read more through the forums as i still dont like the idea of haveing 16x and not useing it.

you have truly been a great help in all the problems i have had be it gpu's freezing or getting a nice stable 4.0ghz lol

just a heads up but im thinking of adding another M4 SSD and maybe raiding them for the O/S i wonder what problems are ahead

idk much about graphic cards, esp with xfire, you wouldnt see any performance loss on the 8x slots maybe very very slight in eyefinity/big resolutions

as for m4 you could do but with raid0 its easier to lose your data, isnt one m4 fast enough? sata2 speeds are very quick

You might consider installing Sapphire Trixx and on the settings page check disable UPLS and also uncheck Sync cards. That way you can OC each card individually...
