Default Z77 D3H PCI Express problem

Hi I am really hoping someone can help me.

    I just upgraded to a Gigabyte Z77 D3H Rev 1.0 and a Intel i5 3570k.

I use a MSI 7950 Twin Frozer graphics card and I cannot get it to display from either the 16x 3.0 slot nor the 4x slot.

I can boot with the Intel integrated graphics but the 7950 will not work. It spins the fans up etc on the 7950 but nothing displays, it was tested in my brothers comp so I know the card works.

I have tried selecting PEG in the BIOS to make sure the PCI Express 16x slot is being used but I will save and once I reboot and go back into the bios it appears to have defaulted back to Auto and reverted back to the Intel integrated graphics.

I am using bios F14 at the moment, but have tried nearly all versions from F15,F18 even F19a.

I did manage to get the 7950 to boot once but the system froze and rebooted within 20 minutes for some strange reason.

    Thanks for any help,

Hi mate, thanks for the reply.

My brothers PSU is actually lower wattage than mine, NZXT 500W. With this Hiper 530 PSU I was previously using the 7950 with a Phenom II 955 and it handled it with no problems. Would the i5 3570k draw more than the Phenom II? I thought it drew less, which is why i wasn't suspecting the PSU,

    Thanks again for the reply

Ahh,I think your fine,it was just a thought,I've seen lots of compatibility issues though with certain brands of psu and gigabyte boards, some work and some don't,so its worth investigating further,I know its a pain to swap out psu's but atleast it would rule it out once and for all

Yeh worth a shot, although I would be very surprised if it was the PSU as this Hiper has been working for the last 2 years on a Gigabyte 890gpa UD3H with no problems!

Will borrow my brothers PSU tomorrow so I can rule it out. What is bugging me though is the BIOS settings not saving, I still can't switch to PEG as it just reverts back to auto once I save and reboot :(

    Thanks for help mate

It depends how much the 7950 draws off the 12v line, did you already rma the board? I've seen another user have same problem n it turned out to be the pci-e switch on the mb that had failed

I bought the board from ebuyer and have already rma'd it but that won't go through until Monday as I think it is required for me to speak to their tech support before they approve an RMA.

If I can't get the board working by tomorrow night I will just purchase another z77 board, I saw another Asus one that looked decent enough. Just a bit gutted really as I have always bought from gigabyte and always recommended them, but this really let me down.

As for the PSU again, the Hiper has about 36A on the 12 v rail, do you think maybe the 3570k is pushing the 12v a bit too hard thus not able to give power to the 7950?

I'd stick with it,could be just a one off, like you said it did work at first so somethings happened, either psu not compatible or board itself, one thing gigabyte has that asus does not,is fantastic after sales/rma service so that's worth bearing in mind

Ok, so I got the graphics card working in the 4x PCI Express slot, don't know how but I just put it in and it booted up to a screen saying that my bios was corrupt and that it was switching to backup bios.

I played Planetside 2 for about 30 minutes, CPU temp didn't go above 50c, GPU temp didn't go above 55c etc so the PSU looks like it is handling it fine and the graphics card is confirmed working perfectly.

So...this does appear as though the PCI 16X is indeed faulty?

    BIOS is now F18.

    Thanks for any further help.

Have you tried back in the 16x slot since it auto recovered/switched to back up BIOS? I still don't know if its the pci-e switch that's the cause or a BIOS issue, there's a switch on the mb that auto enables the pci-e gen 3 slot when a gpu is installed
