Thumbs down Marvell controller on Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H

I thought that the dreaded issues of Marvell controllers had been solved.

First of all why can't a board maker just install all Intel Sata 3 controllers on their boards.

I have a dead controller. Luckily I had an extra Marvell connector to use. All I get from that controller is MV91xx errors and the drive times out. I installed the drive on an Intel controller and it works flawlessly. What a drag! I

I have had nothing but issues with this board. A bios that won't recognize a USB mouse or keyboard if it isn't plugged in a specific socket and oh yeah, Ultrafast boot. that doesn't boot any faster than the F14 (looks nicer but that's it) and whatever setting you use, you just can't get back into the bios.

Also what's the issue of having to go to Via Labs to get a VIA USB firmware update? Why doesn't Gigabyte support this chip on their website?

I am not a happy camper.

I don't know either, I thought it was sorted out as well. My buddy is an Asus fan and continues to point out that gigabyte still uses the dreaded marvell controller where-as Asus have been using Intel 6GB/s for a while now.

Cool Re: Marvell controller on Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H

    Hi Wazza300,

    Thanks for the tip.

I've heard this comment a few times. I would have thought by now that Marvell had gotten it's act together.

    Oh well :(

    Vinster,
Asus doesn't have a board to my knowledge that has more than 2 Intel sata3 ports.

    Cheers.

you are right, the Asus boards has 2x6gb/s Intel and 2x6gb/s Marvell... for some reason I thought they were all Intels.

Drivers come with Windows, they are generic and much better than the original Marvell drives themselves.

Uh, yep. Is why I'm not running any Marvell drivers.
I never had the need to use the Marvell ports until recently, but now I have data disks strung out over several rigs and wanted to consolidate some to one rig. Getting ready to install a a new drive cage for 3 HDD/2 SSD to clean up the wiring a little.

Isn't it sad that the average Joe who usually understands that the newest drivers are new because they are supposed to be better than the older version. It's a bit like Toyota putting out a new Corolla and everyone jumps on it because the older model ran like a star, except the newer model has a bunch of recalls and doesn't perform as well as it's older brother.

Difference here being that Marvell put's out a controller and Joe can't even rely on any drivers because they never had a good driver. Turns out that Nissan knows how to boost a Toyota engine better than it's maker.

6 year old driver that works better than what it's maker can produce.

    Go figure.
