Thumbs up Re: Happy holidays !!

We can reschedule your psu exam for a later date, but there will be a penalty.

My new CyberPower 1500VA 900 watt uninterruptible power supply arrived yesterday so I'm adding an essay question to the exam:

    1. Why does using a UPS help with computer system stability and hardware longevity?
    2. Describe the significance of the UPS VA and WATT ratings.
    3. Describe the significance of modified step sine wave versus pure sine wave UPS topology.
    4. With a modified step sine wave UPS, describe why some (or many) power supplies with active PFC shut down immediately when the main power goes out.
    5. Why doesn't a pure sign wave UPS have a problem when the main power goes out and the battery backup kicks in.

There's some debate about whether the world will end tomorrow or if it will be the dawn of a new era.

What a nice way to bring in a new era with a PSU/UPS exam.
BTW, the essay answer must be at least 4096 words.

Oh my I don't think I'll meet the number of words but since you took the time to ask some good questions I will try to answer ( operative word " TRY" ).
Question 1 ) Using a proper UPS will supply a continuous "clean" power to the power supply aiding it and all the components it serves in more efficient operation which will add to the useful life of all (including the builder--ha !!! ) .
Question 2 ) The Watt rating applies to the actual power demand ( real power drawn ) from the equipment/power supply. VA ( Voltage Amps ) rating determines the "apparent power" for the power supply, voltage applied x current drawn = VA. The ratio of
VA and Watts rating is called "Power Factor" which is important in determining the proper size of a UPS unit needed.
Question 3 ) The significance between the modified step sine wave and the pure sine wave UPS is that the modified sine wave is basically a sine wave form that is approximated by the UPS and has a bit more noise or rather is not as clean and efficient as the
pure sine wave . The pure sine wave is the true sine wave in its purest form and thus is more efficient when it comes to equipment needing quick power loads such as in a high end gaming pc.
Question 4 ) PFC power supplies a faster change over time so in the case of modified step sine wave UPS, the sine waves have a bit more noise ( not as clean ) and will sometimes not be integrated by the power supply fast enough causing the psu to
    shut down.
Question 5 ) Pure sine wave in its nature as previously discussed is the cleanest sine wave and therefore utilized faster than the modified sine wave resulting in immediate recognition and use.
    Please don't post the grade publicly---ha !!!!!!!!!
    Thanks Professor !! -rclark-

Not to shabby, short and to the point.
I think that I'll plagiarize your post and use it in my UPS 101: Faq and Basic Guide thread next week.
You can skip the psu exam, ya done goodly
