    I made some changes based on profjim's recommendation, and i can now boot to windows and run occt for a few hours at 3600mhz and not go over 63C. I cleaned all my fans and reapplied antec formula 7 thermal grease. surfing and games work fine too. However when the computer sleeps it wakes up into an endless reboot. what about my settings would cause windows to sleep then wake up in endless reboot without even reaching windows/login screen? Also, what's the recommended way to begin stress testing overclock (cpu, memory, etc). Thanks again for all your help.

    EXCELLENT!!!
    I didn't expect you to be semi-stable at 3.60 GHz this quickly.
    Save your current bios settings as a new bios profile, even though these are still temporary settings that aren't fully tested.

    Increase Cpu PLL to 1.55 or 1.57 and leave it there.

    Static tRead Value (aka tRD) should be set to 9 for memory channels A & B instead of their current AUTO settings. If you are using the 2.00D memory multiplier, tRD = 10 might be needed for both memory channels.

    I'm not thrilled to see cpu vcore nearly 1.50 volts.
    See if you can get cpu vcore down to about 1.45 or lower in 0.05 steps and gradually increase VTT in 0.02 increments at the same time.
    It's going to be a delicate dance with lowering Cpu Vcore and increasing VTT (Cpu Termination) at the same time. We can try using Load Line Calibration (LLC) later to help lower Cpu Vcore if needed. I prefer not to use it but sometimes it's necessary to use LLC with a high overclock.

    I would run Prime95 Blend tests for at least 1 - 2 hours as a preliminary test to see if your system is somewhat stable. A longer run would be better, but you have quite a few tweaks to be made to see if we can lower Cpu Vcore somewhat.

    I'll need to see your current bios settings from your template before I can make additional recommendations.
    Waking from S3 sleep can be iffy at best when a P45 system has a high overclock, so don't even think of reliably waking from sleep for now.

    Check out my Prime95 posts in EP45-UD3R - random bsod's with 8 gb Patriot DDR2 - bios settings?, starting with post #29 and a few more posts after. There is a Prime95 tutorial link in my signature if needed.

    Take detailed notes about all stress test errors. Noting low long each test runs and which tests fail; this will help speed up the test-tweak-test process. Don't be bashful when it comes to posting screen-shots and full bios templates as they both provide accurate and useful information.

    I overlooked the fact that you ran OCCT for several hours; which OCCT test(s) did you run.
    If you want to use OCCT instead of Prime95 that is OK.
    With your tweaking for (hopefully) lower Cpu Core voltage, you should run the OCCT small dataset test, as this should stress your cpu the most and your memory the least. Running the OCCT large dataset test will stress your memory the most and put less stress on your cpu.

    One reason I like Prime95 stress testing is that I've found if the Cpu Core voltage is a little too low, there will be a larger difference in how many FFT tests are completed by each worker thread in the default 15 minute test and during the complete test. Prime95 automatically creates one worker thread for each cpu core. If one worker thread stops due to an error, note the details and stop the test because even one worker error means that the system is not stable. As I recall, OCCT works in a similar fashion.

    As you will read in the link to Prime95 testing in the other thread, IntelBurn Test (IBT) and LinX are good preliminary stability tests that don't take a long time if you only run a 5 - 10 loop test using about 2048MB of memory. With either of these tests, Cpu Core voltage that is optimal will generate GFlops scores for each loop that are very consistent. and don't vary by more than about 0.04 GFlops per test loop within each program. There is no need to test with IBT and LinX; testing with one program only is sufficient. If either of these tests have an error, your system is not stable and there is no need to run the either of the longer running OCCT or Prime95 programs. Many people report that IBT or LinX ran for a long time without errors, but Prime95 failed the stress test due to one or more worker thread errors.

    Warning: running IBT or LinX, cpu core temperatures can be about 10o (C) higher than Prime95 tests.

    My computer is now running stable! The voltages are on the high side and it got to about 75C under Prime95, but all issues seemed to have been fixed, which were:

    Instant Crash on stress testing - The vcore and other voltages appeared to be too low. For me, any less than 1.45vcore caused BSOD when starting OCCT.
    Sleep - Sleep was not working due to either DRAM timing, voltage or FSB speed. I have read going over 400 FSB causes a computer to enter a power reboot loop when coming out of sleep. Set to 400x9.
    Video games have glitches/tearing - Initially I thought it was because i simply overclocked too far. Now i believe it to be vcore and VTT (cpu termination) settings.

    Prime 95 and OCCT (latest versions) ran well on these settings for two hours separately and did not show any errors. League of Legends no longer seems to tear or glitch, but I still want to try a few more times and try a few other games too. If all goes as planned, I will install an SSD and get my Video Editing machine up and running.

    great ,yeh q6600 clockers were allways heavy on the vcore..those mad impetuous fools:) get your v kicks on route 66 (groan)..well the cpu could take it more apparently. but you still may be able to lower it a little as you say.

    ave a look at mine..just for info( I only run it at 3.6(x8) now.Yeh I know the sig says 3.8 and I could run it at that even with the reduced fans etc but i like to keep the 4-4-412 2 stick memory at easy voltage ,then again I could run the p67 at 4.9 but 4.8,3.8 and 2.8 just looks a symmetrical progression

    UPDATE: League of Legends was still giving me artifacts and programs to detect artifacts such as the gpu test for OCCT, Furmark and OC Scanner were giving tons of errors. After adjusting pci express clock drive to 1000mv, up from 900mv, artifacts seem to have disappeared and artifact scanners no longer detect errors after about an hour. will report back if anything else develops.

    @grandosegood
    Did you have any completely stable settings in the 3500 - 3550MHz range that passed all of you stress tests?
    With your current voltage settings you will probably burn up your hardware with your 3600MHz settings.
    VTT (Cpu Termination) should be kept below ~1.40 volts.
    You are OK with Cpu PLL, bit it should never go above 1.59 volts.
    MCH Core = 1.30 isn't too bad, but it seems a bit high for running with 8GB of 800MHz rated memory at 800MHz.
    With your current memory speed, you can see if using the 2.00B Memory Multiplier works better.
    If yes, tRD = 8 should be stable for both memory channels.

    I suspect that cpu vcore will probably need to be around 1.45 volts.
    Your Reference volt settings might be hurting your efforts, but I have no idea what their settings were with VTT = 1.20.
    If you can get these settings better balanced, you might be able to be stable at 3600MHz with lower voltages.
    Tweaking Clock Skews (CPU and MCH) can make or break your overclocking efforts.

    When I overclocked my E6550 with my EP45-UD3P (rev 1.0), I couldn't get my system stable at 7 x 500MHz or higher.
    My system was rock solid with 7 x 492MHz, with reasonable voltages and excellent temperatures, and that's what I stayed with.

    Keep in mind that many Q6600 systems can't do better than 3200 - 3400MHz.

    Some have better results using 399 or 401MHz instead of using exactly 400MHz.

    well i changed some of the voltages. prime 95 was stable for 4 hours i was gone, so was occt's large data set test and gpu test. however, video games like league of legends give me artifacts and in some cases the display driver stops working with a message like "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." my drivers are only a few months old and the card is an 8800 gtx. this was not happening on default settings. what could be causing games to misbehave while overclock tests seem positive? I haven't had the chance to run each test for more than 4 hours but it doesn't matter until i get this 3d game issue sorted out. my new settings are as follows

    MCH Core = 1.5 is too high, most 8GB setups need at most ~ 1.30 - 1.36 for a stable system.

    From what I remember reading the intel tech docs for the nb mch chip:
    The Vne is 1.45v for the mch same as my q8400 cpu.., lower than the q6600 cpu can take.
    ie that V just on its own could be causing your errors,that and the heat .
    I wouldnt be trying to match the mch V to the cpu V..or maybe that wasnt the intention..dunno.

    The tJ max for the mch is 98 or 100c like the cpu's but it doesnt have the cooling ..or heat transfer or the metal transfer cap like a cpu...or demand states,thermal throttling.
    My mch didnt like temps in excess of 50c.(no its not the board system temp..thats located down near the southbridge somewhere).
    I used a thermocouple probe inserted thru a hole drilled in the heatsink and held with a lil blob of epoxy and a cable tie.(as per the intel tech sheet for manufacturers) but Im not sure that even got the full chip temp.

    The most I ran thru it for any length of time was about 1.42v and that was for more extreme testing.When I fitted the xigmatec cooler ,I just used a thermocouple wire inserted close to the mch so it was probably even less accurate.

    Just found this thread..no I didnt keep any full MIT setups..but it must have been a lot lower in v's than my higher clocks..
    Ill have a look later maybe I "saved" the bios setup..might be usefull.
