    Default Bricked GPU after flashing

    Hi,

I was getting blue screens of death because of the graphics card for months (it happened rarely but still). After trying latest ati drivers etc. I have decided to upgrade the bios version of the gpu. I downloaded bios image and bios update tool for vga from Gigabytes website. I flashed my gpu (and saved a backup in case something goes wrong.) and restarted. And the computer didn't boot. (I flashed from F10 to F11). When I say it won't boot the screen won't turn on and the machine waits without doing anything.

I said; OK let me switch to internal GPU and reflash the old BIOS to the gpu. But motherboard won't use the integrated gpu even though I tell it to use that one. It is always defaulting to use the external GPU but computer won't boot with that. So I unplug the GPU and reboot; the screen turns on and I can access BIOS ( or UEFI ) settings. From there I set the "Init Display First" to IGFX (onboard graphics). I save and exit. I turn off the computer. I plug the GPU back in. I start the computer and it starts without turning on the screen, waits a little bit and then restarts (I think at this point it switches back to external GPU ). After restart the screen won't turn on and the machine waits. So I can't force the motherboard to use onboard graphics; it always tries to use the external GPU. If I can make motherboard to use the onboard graphics, I think I can reflash the gpu with the backup image.

So my computer won't boot even though I tell motherboard to use the integrated/onboard GPU (so I can reflash the external GPU). The gpu fans are working when I plug it so I am pretty sure that the hardware itself is fine.

My graphics card: GIGABYTE - Graphics Card - ATI - PCI Express Solution - Radeon HD 7000 series - GV-R787OC-2GD
    My motherboard : GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-B75M-D3H (rev. 1.0)
My cpu which has Intel HD 4000 integrated: ARK | Intel® Core

Can anyone help me with this issue?

    Thank you.

theres no bios switch on those cards? I know the 7970's have them check carefully near the power sockets for a bios switch

other than that idk why its not saving your setting

could try reflashing the same bios and setting onboard graphics as first display

Thanks for the response. I checked and my gpu does not have a bios switch button.

    I learned that there is a bad patch of 7870s ( Black screens and Radeon HD7870: a solution ? - BeHardware ) So I RMA'd the gpu.

EDIT: Forget what I said I found the issue. And Gigabyte USA was not lying. Sorry about this. I will post an update.

Does your system boot and run OK with your video card removed?
Did you try booting with your video card in the x4 pcie slot?
Can you test your "repaired" video card in another system?

I found the issue. I talked with Gigabyte USA and they assured me that they stress tested the card and it was working fine. After hearing this I started thinking maybe something else is creating the problem. After testing a bunch of stuff I found what was causing the issue; the mainboard BIOS.

My mainboard is Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H (rev. 1.0) with BIOS version F6 (factory installed). I flashed the newest version (F14) and tada! Computer booted without a problem. So GV-R787OC-2GD (my gpu) BIOS version F11 is not compatible with GA-B75M-D3H (rev. 1.0) (my mainboard) BIOS version F6. They are both Gigabyte products but somehow they are not compatible.

I hope this information will be useful to someone else (I spent nearly 15$ and many many hours to learn it :) ).

Thanks for the update, glad to hear that your problem is solved.
With some newer systems, the motherboard bios needs to be updated so that some newer video card modelss will be compatible.
This is one of the reasons that we often encourage owners to flash to the latest motherboard bios version.

Naturally you need to know how to flash using the safest procedure so that you don't brick you motherboard.
Having a dual bios setup is no guarantee that you can't or won't brick your motherboard.
