Unhappy Unable to run i7-2700K stable over 4.5GHz on Z68XP-UD4

    Hello,

I have lost so much hair in past week I can't express.
I upgraded from i5-2500K to i7-2700K hoping to be able to over clock higher but noo. I tried PLL from 1.7-1.9, core voltage from 1.35-1.4 nothing sticks. Every single
attempt was failture. And got to mention this same issue was happening to me on i5-2500K. I wouldn't post this topic if I haven't oced I5-2500K with GA-Z77-D3H on 5GHz!!!

I can't believe motherboard as expensive as Z68XP-UD4 (Costed me 220 euro back in may 2012) is giving me such headaches.
I even tried with UEFI bios U1G (U1L doesn't OC at all rofl and random reboots all the time) and with F6 bios (Tried to download F7A from forum but link dead =/).
Don't get me wrong, I got to boot etc, but after running IBT or Prime95 for some time it was unstable. It doesn't look like voltage issue just some weird thing... Like CPU limit but not?
I don't know, Guess I'm not experienced enough in OCing.

I hope you understand my frustration.
    Any help appreciated!

P.S.: My cooler is bit bad for high ocs but I'm ready to get new one if I would be able to get some stable clocks.
P.P.S.: Current stable (same as my i5 before) is Core Voltage: 1.344 @ 4.5GHz PLL on 1.8. (tested 12h Prime95)

    Regards!

you tend to need a big jump in cpu v for anything over 4.5ghz unless you have a good cpu,im using the same on an asus board 1.35v for 4.5ghz anything higher is either too hot or too much voltage or both, pll youd be fine on auto or maybe 1.65v

    Thanks for response.

The thing is my i5 had exactly the same issue as i7 now. But since I changed to newer motherboard it ocs fine to 5GHz. So thats is epic weird. Just trying to point out the fact this doesn't seem to be limit of chip.
Voltage didn't matter for 4.8GHz. It booted and worked 200s IBT on both lower/higher voltage. Temps went to 80C which isn't so high for i7 as I know. For Tcase it is but for IBT it isn't.
Is it possible motherboard pins could do that? Overclocking issues?
Few months ago I had to align one pin with others because ram didn't work lol. Should've RMA the motherboard but didn't wana wait weeks to get it back =/

In my i5's case I got it to 5GHz with 1.42 core voltage on new motherboard with maxed temps at 77C running IBT (Nuctoa NH-D14 on second PC).

P.S.: Just tried 4.8GHz with 1.450 cpu voltage and same result. IBT crashed after 200s run =/. Temps were bellow 82C with IBT.
P.P.S: Gave 4.8GHz a big Voltage Boost to 1.416 still nothing, temps up to 85C (bad I know...) but still unstable. Crashes saying "watch_dog_timeout" or smthing. Do you think a Nuctoa NH-D14 would help in this matter ?
P.P.P.S.: Guess this is chip limit then, though weird since most people get it up to 5GHz and my chip seems fine at 4.5GHz with very low voltage. Problems start after 4.5GHz meaning even 4.6GHz can't run stable. I'd say thats motherboard issue of some kind not the CPU. Specially after I was able to OC i5-2500K on diff motherboard up to 5GHz. Atm I can not try my theory but soon my friend is getting new Z77 and will do a test.

    http://valid.canardpc.com/2769222 (24h stable) vcore 1.320 / 4.6GHz vcore 1.4 won't run.

I'm disappointed and happy at once. Just ran IBT 10 runs Very High setting with 1.445 vcore @ 4.8GHz Stable !!!!
    Problem: Temperatures reached 90C.

This is with new cooler Nuctoa NH-D14 and I'm very worried. This cooler is supposed to be much better then my previous NH-U12P yet temp difference is 6C at 4.5GHz any ideas what could that bee? I reapplied thermal paste 2x using less as possible :/

I have the same cooler also with my z68 system, its voltages that increases temps

I can recommend some coollaboratory liquid pro paste(well its actually liquid metal) that should knock a good 5-10c off over any thermal paste, other than that you simply need to settle for a lower overclock and lower cpu voltage

ive got my 2600k at 4.6ghz now with 1.38v

What do you think i got these 3 thermal pastes at home: Akasa Pro Grade (460), Artic MX-2 and Nuctoa NT-H1 which one shall I use?
I believe on previous cooler the MX-2 did better cooling then nuctoa's but Im not sure. I really want second opinion on this.

Idk if i wana sattle with 4.5GHz or lower. I just paid 65 euros to get to 4.8GHz I mean i kinda really wana run these clocks :D.

P.S.: I changed all fans inside chasis to 100% (changing power from motherboard to direct PSU) and temps dropped for 4C (max 86C with IBT) that doesn't sound too bad for IBT which really maxes CPU out as nothing else can.

Applied MX-2 thermal compound, Changed some fan speeds, Max temp : 84C. (-6C) using IBT (so normal gaming etc will never go over 60) I think I'm good.
I'm still very confused tho, OpenHardwareMonitor shows max temps for cores: Core#1: 74C, Core#2: 83C, Core#3: 78C, Core#4: 84C. I know how cores are placed in package but still why there is such big difference? On my i5-2500K difference was about 2-4C on core max, now up to 10C ? thats huge O.o

the noctua is the best paste out of those imo

yeah theres always a variation across the core temps,if you can get some liquid pro,you would see even better temps but it looks ok now

I was worried about voltage a little so dropped to 1.428 and 4.7GHz OC. Seems stable and temps are much lower then before with Prime95 they top at 72C and 81C in IBT thought was hoping for 5GHz on 1.38v core as some people are able to archive =(

5ghz with 1.38v is very rare, you'd need a golden cpu for that

I have a rule to stay below 1.4v and 80c,some go above but me personally I don't like to
