    Default X58 ssd question

    Just purchased a 250g Samsung 840 non pro SSD for my older GA-X58A-UDSR system (bios FF), plugged into the Sata 3gb/s connector as I understand the 6 gb/s Marvel is a waste of time.
    I moved Arma 3 over to it and have found I have a stuttering mess, so much so that I had to shut down mid game to move A3 back to my HD.

    Is there anything that can be done short of upgrading to make this workout?

    Cheers
    Fawlty

    so if the game resides on the SSD the game studders??? but if it's on a normal platter drive it's fine?

    That doesn't make at all any sense....

    can you list out your drive configuration, you have your rig listed in your sig but nothing mentions your drives, also what OS, driver versions?

    Vin
    Main Rig
    OS = Win8.1
    CPU = i7-980X @ 4.17Ghz 144x29 cooled by custom Loop

    Thanks for the feed back Vinster,
    I unplugged the SSD, will do a upgrade after summer.
    From what I've been reading I'll never get anywhere near top performance out of this older MB so the efforts are sort of in vain
    I did a speed test and my WD blacks were only off by about 20%

    it should run fine,try it on the marvell ports too,they are ok for single ssd

    as for intel ports make sure you set to ahci mode in the bios(same thing for marvell ports,they have a separate ahci settings in the bios)

    install the latest intel rapid storage drivers and be sure to run the latest bios for your board,theres also a recent firmware update for the Samsung 840's

    not sure with the marvell ports

    could try it it will just bsod at windows splash screen if you can't,idk the reg tweak either for the marvell/ahci,its simple for the intel ports and no reinstall needed

    if you wanna stay on intel ports and run ahci mode,stay in ide mode and run this reg file,then restart into bios and set the INTEL sata ports to ahci mode,save/exit and boot into windows and that's it ahci mode without reinstalling

    yeah all it does is enable the install of the ahci drivers without reinstalling windows,it changes a 1 to a 0 in the registery,ill post how to reverse it

    How to enable AHCI in Windows 7 RC after installation

    |||

    AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) enables native command queuing and hot-plugging through SATA host controllers (Serial-ATA) for your hard drives. In many scenarios it enables more efficient multi-tasking. Vista was the first Windows OS to support AHCI out of the box, where as Windows 7 does the same. But an issue with AHCI is that if you install the OS without enabling AHCI in the BIOS, enabling it after installation will render your OS unusable. This is because Windows disable the AHCI driver since it is not needed during the installation.

    There is one way to fix this, although you need to have knowledge of registry editing. The detailed steps from Microsoft are as follows:

    To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
    1.Exit all Windows-based programs.
    2.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    3.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
    4.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesM sahci

    5.In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
    6.In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
    7.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

    After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.
    just put a 1 instead of 0 to reverse it

    ive used it many times,ahci is essential for ssd's,its probably why it was stuttering

    Thanks again,

    Just remembered I can clone C drive to an external drive as well so, I've got it covered.

    Now just need time to get after it.
